Scope of Job:
The Senior Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs (Sr. AVPAA) reports to and serves as the chief advisor to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Student Success & P16 Integration (EVPAA) and has a broad array of responsibilities within the Division of Academic Affairs. The person holding this position will be an active participant in the administrative decision-making processes in the Division of Academic Affairs. The Sr. AVPAA is responsible for assisting in planning, directing, evaluating, and developing undergraduate academic programs; collaborating with other divisions of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to analyze and develop recommendations in response to emerging academic priorities; and providing leadership for developing and achieving strategic initiatives.

Description of Duties:
The primary functions and responsibilities include:
• Works with the senior leadership team and the University community to implement UTRGV’s strategic plan.
• Provides leadership for meeting the goals and objectives of the University’s strategic plan in regard to undergraduate and graduate education.
• Collaborates with faculty and other administrators to ensure that student success is at the forefront of UTRGV’s academic, research, and service initiatives.
• Works with the Deans in developing new and innovative programmatic initiatives aimed at enhancing and promoting excellence in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service.
• Provides leadership and facilitates processes for curriculum development, as well as focusing on the development of new state-of-the art academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, including the areas of bilingual and global education.
• Works with the EVPAA and key academic leaders on issues and processes pertaining to faculty promotion and tenure, post-tenure reviews, and annual evaluations.
• Some of the primary units reporting to the may include the Honors College, B3 Institute, McAllen Teaching Site and Starr County Teaching site.
• Supports Faculty Affairs initiatives across the University.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
Minimal general supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Supervises assigned employees.

Required Education:
A PhD or terminal degree in the field of study.

Preferred Education:


Required Experience:
• At least five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership and administrative experience in a university environment with experience as a faculty member.
• Track record of translating an organization’s overarching strategy into an effective, long-term action plan for his or her area of responsibility.
• Work requires demonstration of communication skills that enable him/her to provide vision and direction to a large group of highly successful professionals across a broad range of disciplines.
• Work requires exceptional management and business/operational skills.
• Proven experience working at a master’s or doctoral granting university.
• Proven experience in working across divisions (e.g., Academic, Student, and Business Affairs, University Advancement, and Information Technology).
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Experience:
• A strong record of academic and scholarly accomplishments and qualification for tenure at the rank of full professor within his/her academic discipline.
• Supervisory experience in academic or research-related higher education administration.

Experience with standard office equipment.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Work is performed in office environment.
