APPLICATION DEVELOPER/ONTOLOGIST JR./SR.
Duties: We seek a Biomedical Ontologist to work collaboratively as part of an established team of 30+ developers and biologists working on highly visible web sites integrating diverse large-scale datasets relevant to various aspects of global infectious disease biology (EuPathDB.org). A new component encompassing clinical and epidemiological data (particularly related to enteric pathogen disease) is expected to significantly extend existing genomics and bioinformatics resources, engaging a broad community of clinical and public health researchers. The successful candidate will develop and apply biomedical ontologies, mapping and modeling clinical and epidemiological data and key information about these datasets to biomedical ontologies. This activity will draw upon Open Biological and Biomedical Ontologies (OBOfoundry.org) to facilitate cross-project semantic integration and provide standardized semantics for web interface terminologies. Ontologies are part of an exciting new movement in information technology that elevates data to the level of knowledge, and technologies in this space are under intensive development. As a result, there is significant opportunity to make an impact in what is increasingly emerging as a popular field in biomedical informatics. Related duties include using these ontologies to provide semantic structure for web interface terminologies. This position offers the opportunity to interact with leading biomedical investigators, ontology experts, and skilled programmers in a university setting. Participation in the preparation of scientific papers and technical documentation, and attendance at scientific meetings are encouraged.
Qualifications: JR: Bachelor's degree and one year of programming or systems analysis experience is required. MS or Ph.D. with research experience related to biological sciences preferred. Experience in programming or scripting languages also required. Preference for experience with ontologies, ideally biomedical ontologies; the ideal candidate will have experience with OWL-based ontologies and Protege. The successful candidate will have the ability to interact with multiple teams and data providers.
SR: MS degree and two to three years of ontology or knowledge representation experience is required. PhD, three to five years of experience, and research experience related to biological sciences strongly preferred. Experience in programming or scripting languages is required as is experience with developing OWL-based ontologies, ideally biomedical ontologies. The ideal candidate will have experience with OBO Foundry and realism-based ontologies and semantic graph databases. The successful candidate will have the ability to interact with multiple teams and data providers.
