Overview

The Senior Associate Director, working with the Director, provides vision, strategic leadership and decision making for long-term planning of CST's goals, objectives, and directions. CST's grand challenges are to 1) cultivate a science-literate student body; 2) extend STEM experiences for all people; 3) advance exploration of shared creativity across STEM, arts, humanities, and social sciences; and 4) facilitate faculty and student engagement in interdisciplinary research and intellectual exchange. To address these, the Senior Associate Director provides bold, forward-thinking leadership that fosters intellectual exchange, course development, programming and research among faculty, students, staff and visitors.

This individual engages CST staff and Faculty Executive Committee members to leverage expertise and elicit ideas in the context of strategic undertakings. To broaden engagement, s/he cultivates relationships with faculty, students, and staff across the university, as well as with community partners, foundations, corporations, and other relevant stakeholders outside the university. The Senior Associate Director identifies and evaluates strategic opportunities to allocate CST's financial and human resources. This individual strategically plans for CST's local and global impact in the context of national and local discourse on 21st Century STEM education.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership and Planning: The central role of the Senior Associate Director is to provide vision, strategic leadership and decision-making for long-term planning for CST. Engage the Council staff and Faculty Executive Committee members for expertise and ideas in strategic undertakings. Identify and evaluate strategic opportunities to allocate the Council's financial and human resources. Strategically plan for CST's local and global impact in the context of national and local discourse on 21st Century STEM education, the changing landscape of higher education, and the opportunities at the intersection of STEM, arts, humanities, and social sciences. Advance CST's mission and plans at Princeton, and provide and lead strategic communication plan.


  • Council Operations: Provide vision and leadership for the CST's operations and management. Identify resource and staffing needs to support and strategically grow CST. Provide leadership for retention and success of qualified staff. Cultivate partnerships with academic units and explore the co-hiring of visiting faculty, scholars, or artists. Supervise the Program Coordinator, Event Planner, and Professional Specialists and other staff as CST grows. Oversee hiring and managing of new professional and part-time staff. Evaluate need for and pursue acquisition of additional space for staff and programming. Advance Council initiatives and future initiatives. Promote, grow, and sustain CST course offerings. Regularly review and continuously seek to refine and grow the operational execution and effectiveness of CST.


  • Research Strategy: Position CST as a leading entity on advancing STEM literacy for the 21st Century by bridging the gap between STEM, the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Define and carry out an evaluation plan for CST's activities and courses. Utilize rigorous research methodologies to evaluate CST's activities and courses. Disseminate findings from the evaluation plan to advance CST's mission, demonstrate the impact of CST's work, and contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the changing landscape of higher education. Seek and lead externally funded grants. Provide professional development to CST staff and collaborators on research-based evaluation methodologies. Oversee the development of regular reporting and budgets, and respond to requests for information.


  • Financial Performance and Viability: Responsible for the careful and appropriate management of CST's financial resources. Manage fiscal year budgeting of the CST's approximate $1M annual budget and short- and long-term budget projection. Monitor and effectively communicate the policies and regulations relevant to CST's endowed funds. As needed, pursue and secure additional funding to support and advance CST's mission. Maintain open lines of communication with the Provost's office, the General Council, and the Office of Finance and Treasury to ensure proper use of endowed funds. Keep the Faculty Director informed about the Council's budget.


Qualifications

Doctorate in STEM or STEM education; Demonstrated ability to provide vision, strategic leadership and planning; Strong ability to take initiative and work in an unstructured environment; Experience with managing a large budget; Expertise in national issues/debates/research about STEM education and pedagogy; Ability to cultivate partnerships with faculty and students to advance the work of the CST; Ability to meet with representatives from peer institutions who are developing new approaches and methods in STEM education, and to implement best practices at Princeton; Familiarity with various methods of assessment and evaluation; Strong analytical skills; Ability to manage and provide professional development to full-time staff; Strong interest in working across academic disciplines and institutions; strong intellectual, organizational, operational, and institution building qualities are essential.
