Assistant Professor Plant Virology

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences at Clemson University is seeking to fill a 12-month, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level (70% research and 30% teaching) to work on virus diseases of plants. The position is located on the main campus in Clemson, South Carolina. Clemson University is an R1 Land Grant University located on the shores of Lake Hartwell within view of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the upper piedmont region of South Carolina, USA. The 1,400-acre campus is part of the 18,000 acres of University Farms and Forests devoted to teaching and research. The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous and innovative program in fundamental and applied Plant Virology, focused on viruses and viroids of economically important plants in South Carolina and the southeastern United States. The incumbent is expected to develop an extramurally supported research program that gains regional and national recognition. The position is currently linked to and financially supported in part by the National Clean Plant Network to provide virus-indexed scions of commercial significance to peach growers. This responsibility requires routine testing of peach leaf samples in the spring. In addition, the incumbent is expected to test plants with unusual symptoms that might be caused by viruses or viroids-including host range studies and purification of causal agents. While the preferred technical skillset for these responsibilities includes Quantitative PCR, RT-PCR, cloning, and Next Generation Sequencing, research interests at any biological scale, from molecular to ecological, are welcome. Individuals with interests in virus-arthropod vector interactions are especially encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with other faculty in the department and college and with scientists across the nation. S/he also is expected to interact with stakeholders and to participate in and provide leadership to Clemson University commodity teams and other groups of like-minded colleagues in the region and around the country. There is an expectation of excellence in grantsmanship, timely communication of research findings through publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, and active participation in training and mentoring of graduate students and postdocs. Teaching responsibilities include a graduate course in Plant Virology and an undergraduate course based on the incumbent's interests and the needs of the department. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Virology, Microbiology, or a closely related field. Additional experience beyond graduate school is desirable but not required.
