Pediatric Acute Pain Service Advanced Practice Nurse (Instructor)

The University of Colorado School of Medicine, a premier research-intensive institution located at the base of the Rocky Mountains, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Instructor-Advanced Practice Nurse in the Department of Anesthesiology.

Major Functions

The Instructor-Advanced Practice Nurse, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary Pain Consultation Service at Children's Hospital Colorado

Examples of Work Performed


  • APN coverage for the Acute Pain Service. APN coverage is 7 days/week and includes holidays. Specifically, for hospitalized Acute Pain Service patients, the individual will round on inpatients, advance the treatment plan in consultation with the attending physician, write necessary analgesia orders, and collaborate with the primary service to achieve comfort goals. Further, the individual will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in developing and implementing pain-related policies and procedures. Pain-related research and evaluation opportunities will also be available.
  • Provides comprehensive assessment and management of pain for hospitalized children
  • Provides telephone triage and documentation for post-operative acute pain patients at home with elastomeric pumps
  • Participates actively in the Pain Resource Nurse program
  • Provides pain-related nursing education
  • Participates in pain-related research and evaluation
Specific Duties

  • Promotes an environment of mutual respect among the interdisciplinary team, referring services, children, and families
  • Practices holistically, considering patients' physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual needs
  • In collaboration with Pain Service physicians, obtains a health history, performs a physical examination, and establishes a plan of care for pain related to the diagnosis.
  • Orders and adjusts medication and non-pharmacologic therapies in consultation with Pain Service physicians
  • Orders and evaluates diagnostic studies, including lab and x-ray
  • In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, evaluates and manages a follow-up plan based on the patient's response
  • Documents in the medical record the chief complaint, history, physical findings, diagnosis, treatments, and progress
  • Initiates requests for consultation to other healthcare providers
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to maintain good communication among families, primary care providers, and other referral services
  • Practices in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Collaborates in the development of pain-related nursing procedure statements, protocols and patient/parent educational handouts
  • Assists with problem identification and data collection for research and/or quality improvement projects
  • Independently seeks opportunities to expand own clinical knowledge and skills and achieve professional development goals
  • Preceptor for Acute Care-Pediatric Nurse Practitioner students
  • Participates in professional affiliations and networks with professional colleagues
  • Participates on department/division/hospital committees as needed/requested



Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Colorado
  • Graduate preparation in nursing (e.g., MS, ND, DNP)
  • Acute Care Certified PNP / FNP


Desired Qualifications:

  • Certified PNP with prescriptive authority
  • Experience in pediatric pain assessment and management
  • At least 3-years experience in pediatric nursing
