Posting Summary:
The Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) in the Curry School of Education seeks applicants for multiple Research Specialist (wage) positions to collect data in pre-kindergarten classrooms in Newport News Virginia. The P2K Research Specialist (wage) collects data for the P2K project (Understanding the Power of Preschool for Kindergarten Success), which explores how children's specific experiences in preschool contribute to their school readiness and kindergarten success. Incumbents conduct observations within pre-kindergarten classrooms and administer assessments of children's academic and self-regulation skills. Duties also include data entry, data uploading, ensuring data integrity, and visiting classrooms to distribute and collect parent and teacher consent forms and surveys. Work is approximately 20 hours/week during three 6- to 8-week data collection windows
(fall: 9/24/18 - 11/16/18; winter: 1/7/19 - 03/1/19; spring: 4/8/19 - 5/31/19).

A bachelor's degree in Social Science, Education, or a related field is required, as is one year of experience performing direct work with children in an educational setting or an out-of-school setting (such as a summer camp or an after school program). Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; strong organization skills and attention to detail; and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population are essential. Ability to use and troubleshoot technology is required. In addition, knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, and Word), use of the internet, proficiency with laptops, tablets and/or PCs, and experience uploading/downloading information using cloud storage platforms is required.

Reliable transportation for traveling between schools is required. Incumbents must also be able to attend a one-week training session in the Newport News area in August or September.
