The Princeton University Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) provides leadership, technical support, information and training, consultation, and periodic audits of environmental, health and safety practices and regulatory compliance. EHS employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of 17 professional and support staff working to address health and safety issues in several broad areas including: workplace safety, occupational health, laboratory safety, emergency management, environmental programs, and general health and safety for the campus community.
Manages assigned environmental health and safety programs, including Chemical Safety, Laboratory Safety, Chemical Waste, and Hazardous Materials Shipping programs. Provides professional environmental health and safety services with regard to potential exposures to toxic substances and hazardous conditions. Manages all aspects of assigned programs, including audits and surveys, assessing risk and monitoring exposure as needed, incident and accident investigation and analysis, and developing and providing information and training as they relate to programmatic responsibilities. Reviews effectiveness and efficiency of programs and considers and implements program improvements. Under the direction of the Associate Director for Laboratory Safety, coordinates and directs the Laboratory Safety Survey Program and Laboratory Safety Training.
Manages all aspects of the following programs: Chemical Exposure Assessment, Laboratory Safety, Laboratory Safety Surveys, Emergency Information Posters, Lab Risk Assessments, and Hazardous Materials Shipping. This requires a thorough knowledge of all applicable existing and new standards, codes and regulations; providing for timely dissemination of pertinent information to all segments of the University; developing written and practical programs to ensure compliance; interaction with all levels of the University community to develop and implement programs and measure effectiveness; initiating, conducting and providing comprehensive and retrievable documentation; periodic auditing of program effectiveness; developing web-based materials; fielding technical questions and problem solving.
Surveys, Inspections and Evaluations: Conducts or supervises health and safety surveys for the assigned programs and conducts or assists with various health and safety surveys in support of the Laboratory Safety, Biosafety and Workplace Safety programs. Develops and documents recommendations for corrective action. Follows up on recommendations provided to the University community. Coordinates annual reviews of written safety programs.
Develops and conducts training programs for all assigned programs. This includes, but is not limited to, laboratory supervisor briefings, general lab safety training, nanomaterials safety training, hazardous materials shipping training, waste management, awareness training for maintenance and janitorial staff and training for architecture/construction project managers. Develops and manages web-based refresher training.
Assists senior professional staff, mainly the Associate Director, with aspects of other health and safety programs, such as the Laboratory Safety Program and the Chemical Waste Disposal Program. Duties may include development of written materials for dissemination, answering technical questions, conducting training or inspections, etc.
Responds to emergencies and incidents involving hazardous materials and research laboratories. This includes incidents that occur after-hours.
- B.S. in chemistry, environmental science or closely related field required (Master's Degree preferred)
- Five years work experience providing safety services in a university or research laboratory setting
- Ability to master computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate to a diverse community of clients
- Able to effectively prepare and present information and training to adult learners
- Ability to work in a team environment and follow work rules and procedures
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (e.g., waste drums, instruments, SCBA), climb ladders, wear respiratory protection, work in hot or cold environments, stand for extended periods of time, enter confined spaces, and work on elevated surfaces.
Valid driver's license
- Good organizational and time management skills and ability to balance multiple assignments
- Experience in creating and maintaining web pages using software such as Drupal
- IATA and DOT certification or ability to achieve this status
