Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Campus and Media Relations, the Communications and Media Relations Manager is responsible for developing and managing campus communications and media relations initiatives, and handling routine and crisis communications for Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York.

The Communications and Media Relations Manager will work closely with the Director of Campus and Media Relations to plan and execute media outreach strategies. The Manager will develop and implement strategic initiatives designed to increase national and international exposure of the College and engage prospective students and alumni, in support of the College's academic, admissions and advancement goals, and institutional priorities.

The Communications and Media Relations Manager has a broad range of responsibilities including management of media relations, campus communications and content development for various channels.

Specific areas of responsibility include communications planning and strategy; developing strong relationships with local, national and international media; managing media outreach, tracking measurement of media placements and compiling related reports; researching and writing materials for the news media; researching and writing content for the Skidmore website and various digital media channels; developing content for weekly campus bulletins and Scope, Skidmore's online and print alumni magazine.

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years of professional experience in media or public relations, strategic communications, or journalism.
- Ability to develop positive relationships with local, regional, national and international reporters, including trade reporters, for the placement of news stories about the College and its students, faculty, staff and alumni.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with faculty, students, administrators and other members of the campus community to uncover unique stories for the news media.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and implement strategic communication programs and media relations initiatives. Provide support for crisis communications, meetings and special events, as needed.
- Willingness and ability to work early mornings, nights and weekends, including holidays, as required to cover assignments on occasion and urgent matters as they arise.
- Working knowledge of or ability to learn how to use media monitoring and tracking software, such as Critical Mention, Muck Rack and Cision.
- Demonstrated ability to write timely and compelling news stories that appeal to a broad range of audiences, excellent proofreading skills and great attention to detail. Knowledge of AP writing style.
