Job Information

Job Summary:

The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools' enrollment has grown significantly in recent years which has resulted in increased participation in athletics and several new sports being added to the Middle and High School rosters. As a result, the School is adding the position of Co-Director to its Athletics Departments to partner with the AD both to support the size of the program and to build on the foundation already established. The Co-Athletic Directors have overall responsibility for administering all athletic programs in the Middle and High Schools (grades 6th to 12th) and fostering a community spirit consistent with Lab's mission and core values among coaches, athletes, and parents. The Co-Athletic Directors have shared responsibility for overseeing daily operations of the sports program and the coordination of various administrative functions within the department with the specific delegation of responsibilities determined upon appointment of this position. The Co-Athletic Directors are expected to build deep relationships with students, families, other faculty and staff to communicate about student progress and to foster a culture of community. Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate and supervise interscholastic athletics for the middle and high schools
  • Evaluate the program and plan strategically for future opportunities
  • Evaluate coaches to provide feedback, ensure excellence in coaching, and support professional growth
  • Hire competent coaches who are properly trained in their sport and safe facilitation of the program
  • Maintain and revise the coaches' manual each year and deliver a comprehensive coach orientation at the start of each season to align standards and protocol
  • Ensure the health and safety of all students in the athletic program through partnership with the school nurses, athletic trainer, coaches, and campus security
  • Establish a student-athlete culture rooted in the Schools' mission and values
  • Support the non-cut policy and work with coaches to develop student-athletes' skills at all levels
  • Be a visible presence at practices and competitions
  • Work with the facilities department to properly maintain and secure all athletic equipment and athletic facilities, fields and courts
  • Represent the school at various state, regional, and national athletic associations
  • Prepare, submit, and administer a budget each year to fund the athletic programs of the school
  • Provide the scheduling of all athletic contests, arrange for athletic transportation, and hire all game officials
  • Maintain records of team and individual athletic accomplishments and submit copies of same to the development office for historical purposes
  • Oversee the distribution, collection, cleaning, repair, and storage of all athletic uniforms and equipment
  • Communicate with parents and the school community through the learning management system and the website
  • Work with the Middle and High School Principals to facilitate the delivery and development of the program and partner with the Middle and High School Deans of Students to support student-athletes
  • Support the school and its leadership

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Master's Degree preferred


Certifications:
  • Memberships/Certifications preferred: NIAA, RAA, RMSAA or CAA


Experience:
  • 5-7 of years middle school, high school, or collegiate athletics experience required
  • Previous experience working in a K-12 athletic administrative environment preferred
  • Customer service experience preferred
  • Experience working with a wide range of students with diverse backgrounds such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, learning abilities, class, language and nationality


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to use computers extensively for 2 hours to 4 hours
  • Ability to move around building, athletic facilities and fields
