Job Description Summary:

The George Washington Cancer Center (GWCC) (http://smhs.gwu.edu/cancercenter/) brings together the resources of the George Washington University, the GW Medical Faculty Associates, and the GW University Hospital to expand current research efforts in the fight against cancer and to position our institution as the premier cancer care provider in the Washington, D.C. area.

The GWCC is seeking a candidate to fulfill the role of Laboratory Manager within the Fernandes research group at the GWCC. The Fernandes group is part of the GWCC and works in the field of cancer engineering, wherein the focus of projects undertaken is to devise innovative solutions to fight cancer using nanotechnology/nanomedicine. These include, but are not limited to, the synthesis, biofunctionalization, and characterization of nanotechnology-based platforms to target, image, and/or treat cancer and testing these platforms both in vitro and in appropriate animal models. The long-term goal is to translate the findings of these projects into novel diagnostic or treatment modalities for cancer. A suitable candidate would therefore have significant work experience in both cancer biology and engineering.

This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) and will receive mentorship from the PI. Conversely, the position will play a critical role within the team by assisting the PI in maintaining smooth functioning of the team including experimental workflow, ordering, and other aspects of lab management. The individual will also have the opportunity to lead an independent project and lead team members assigned to that project.

Duties include:
• Provides leadership to staff engaged in the development of research programs in order to accomplish the PI’s goals. Mentors researchers within the team and assists the PI in supervising the team to accomplish their individual/group responsibilities
• Uses a wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software
• Manages laboratory budget and resources, including maintaining and troubleshooting equipment, initiating capital equipment purchases, arranging service contracts on capital equipment, and managing inventories of the lab and purchasing
• Oversees general upkeep of the laboratory that complies with institutional GLP, Biosafety guidelines and maintaining inspection records
• Assists the PI in maintaining up to date IACUC, IRB, Biosafety protocols, as needed
• Participates in portfolio review meetings with PI and financial coordinator and other individual and group meetings, and collaborative meetings with other groups within and outside the institution
• Assists PI with submission of proposals to any relevant institutional, federal, or private foundation agency
• Collaborates with PI to develop and/or refine standard operating procedures (SOPs) and experimental protocols in order to continue and advance the research
• Generates records such as laboratory notebooks, reports, and standard operating procedures in accordance with institutional best practices
• Disseminates the findings of the studies through reports, abstract submission to professional conferences, presentation at regional/national/international conferences, and/or manuscripts for peer-review consistent with institutional and funding agency policies
• Prepares or assists in preparing grant applications for funding from external funding agencies (including governmental, philanthropic, and/or private).
• Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline plus 5 years of relevant professional experience or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

-Degree in Cancer Biology, Biomedical Engineering or a related field preferred. -Experience of working with teams and supervising team members to achieve the assigned goals/objectives of the research project preferred.
