JOB DESCRIPTION

Provide a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate classroom learning environment in order to support the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of enrolled children so that they may be prepared for success in kindergarten and beyond. Lead teachers will also provide appropriate role modeling, guidance, and mentoring of parents of enrolled children.

JOB DUTIES

Under direct/general supervision of the Program Manager, this position is directly responsible for the care and education of children enrolled in his/her assigned classroom. This position requires an understanding and appreciation of the issues of low income families, being non-discriminatory in feelings and attitudes and with a willingness to welcome parent in the classroom. The incumbent works with parents and children and has the primary responsibility for the daily operations of the educational program, which includes but is not limited to, setting up classroom materials, clean-up, curriculum planning and presentation, the keeping of required records, and participation in requested trainings, and other duties as assigned. This position requires strong written and oral communication skills with co-workers, parents, and children, and has the responsibility to meet compliance for all ECEAP Performance Standards and contract requirements.

  • Chooses and conducts assessments that consider all aspects of children's development and are sensitive to family backgrounds and children's special needs; meeting contract timelines in TS Gold;
  • Uses assessment information to adapt curriculum, individualize teaching, and inform program development;
  • Designs an enriched learning environment that stimulates learning and provides easy and frequent access to learning materials and experiences;
  • Creates a caring community for learning in which teachers use their knowledge of children's home and classroom lives to inform their teaching and ensure that children are protected from bias and discrimination;
  • Supervises children to ensure their safety and maximize their learning;
  • Uses time, grouping, and routines to achieve learning goals;
  • Modifies the environment, teaching approaches, learning opportunities, and scheduling to respond to the interests and needs of children;
  • Makes learning meaningful for all children by knowing what children know and what they want to learn, their family and cultural needs, and community values;
  • Demonstrates continuous improvement and efforts for quality education and environment as expected using the Early Achiever Framework, ITERS, ECERS and CLASS tools through coaching and training;
  • Uses instruction to deepen children's understanding as well as build their skills and knowledge by using a broad range of approaches and diverse teaching¬∑ strategies;
  • Supervises, advises, mentors, and directs work of ECE Program Aides and student workers regarding program, parents, and children's concerns;
  • Mentors ECE students and supports student expectations, offering reflection and feedback to encourage their learning;
  • Provides families with community resource referrals based on information shared by parents/guardians;
  • Demonstrates program goals, core values, and standards to staff, parents, children, and the public;
  • Participates in educational, professional, and personal improvement. Participates in current trainings;
  • Supports the TEFD community outreach by participating in designated community events, which may involve evening and/or weekend time;
  • Acts as reporting agent regarding issues of child abuse and neglect;
  • Complies with program standards by showing documentation: a recent negative TB test; current Infant/Child CPR and First Aid cards; a current Food Handler's Permit; and AIDS/HIV certificate, Department of Early Learning Portable Background check and College's background check; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Positions typically require forty-five college quarter hours in early childhood development/education/special education or equivalent or a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA)

AND

two years of experience working in a group setting with children of the ages enrolled in the program.

OR

Equivalent education/experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual especially in Spanish and English
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a variety of people and values diversity.
  • Awareness of own cultural values and biases.
