Part-Time Lecturer (First Year Writing Program)
The Department of English Language and Literature invites applications for part-time lecturers in the First-Year Writing Program, beginning Fall 2018. We seek colleagues who value contemporary approaches to teaching writing, who are dedicated to active professional development, and who seek to create vibrant, innovative environments for practice-based teaching and learning.
The First-Year Writing Program provides instruction in WRTG120: Composition I: Writing the College Experience and WRTG121: Composition II: Researching the Public Experience to approximately 3,000 students each year. Part-time lecturers who teach first-year writing sometimes also have appointments as writing consultants in EMU's University Writing Center (UWC). The UWC provides writing support to all EMU students--undergraduate and graduate students, native and non-native English speakers--in the form of one-to-one consultations, small group consultations, and workshops.
Teaching may include a number of particular obligations which employees are expected to fulfill, including but not limited to: meeting with students during and outside of assigned classes, assessing student work and performance, preparing syllabi and course materials, providing copies of syllabi and course materials to their supervisor on request, and assigning and submitting grades in accordance with established Eastern Michigan University schedules.
Perform related departmental duties as required.
Candidates for these part-time lecturer positions must hold an MA in composition and rhetoric, writing studies, or written communication (or a related field in English Studies) by August 2018. Ideal candidates will have experience teaching first-year writing and working as a tutor in a writing center.Supplemental Information
Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume or CV, and a recent course syllabus and/or statement of teaching philosophy. Two letters of reference may be requested at a later date.
