Engineering IT is the primary information technology services provider for Engineering at Illinois, serving the IT needs of more than 1,100 faculty and staff and over 10,000 students. The Research Services Manager or Assistant Director for Research Services position reports to the Director, Engineering IT Shared Services, and oversees the operations of the Research Services group within the User Services division of Engineering IT Shared Services. This team serves faculty and researchers throughout the College of Engineering and is responsible for: research IT consulting services; desktop support for faculty, staff, and graduate students; high performance computing; specialized applications and computing hardware in research labs. This position also serves as an advisor to the Director of Engineering IT (and, at the Assistant Director level, the Associate Dean for IT) on tactical and strategic issues that may affect the organization. This position may also be assigned as a Customer Relationship Manager to various College units or constituent groups.

Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Advise the Director of Engineering IT (and, at the Assistant Director level, the Associate Dean for IT) on tactical and strategic issues.
  • Supervise staff assigned to subdivision / team(s)
  • Manage services assigned to subdivision / team(s)
  • Develop and maintain standards, policies, and procedures covering the work of the subdivision / team
  • Identify resources needed for current and future projects and work with the Director and the other members of the Engineering IT Leadership team to obtain needed resources
  • Research new services and technologies that may improve the service offerings of the subdivision or organization
  • Act as a liaison to assigned College units in the role of Customer Relationship Manager to pro-actively develop and maintain good working relationships between those units and Engineering IT
  • Serve as a representative and liaison between Engineering IT and other campus IT organizations to maintain positive working relationships and to develop partnerships
  • Coordinate with Tech Services, NCSA, and other campus IT organizations on shared service offerings
  • Other duties as assigned to further the research operations of Engineering IT Shared Services.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Research Services Manager:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Six (6) years' professional experience in IT operations which must include: (years' experience may run concurrently)
  • Three (3) years' experience with the responsibilities of the division
  • Three (3) years' experience working with customers
  • One (1) year experience hiring, training, and managing students or staff
  • Experience in participating in diverse workgroups
  • Demonstrated competence managing hourly or professional employees
  • Understanding of HR policies and best practices for hiring, evaluating, developing, and disciplining employees
  • Ability to plan and adjust allocations of staff and budget to meet assigned objectives
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and presenting training materials
  • Experience leading technical projects with small teams (3-5) of direct reports
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to design internal workflow to improve performance
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, to work independently, and with a team
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude and understanding of information technology best practices


  • Assistant Director for Research Services:
    • Bachelor's Degree; Master's Degree will be considered equivalent of one (1) year of experience
    • Eight (8) years' professional experience in IT operations which must include: (years' experience may run concurrently)
    • Four (4) years' experience supervising staff
    • Three (3) years' experience with the responsibilities of the division
    • Three (3) years' experience working with customers
    • Experience in participating in diverse workgroups
  • Demonstrated competence hiring, managing, and disciplining professional staff
  • Proven record of IT project leadership with mixed teams to accomplish goals at 6+ months
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize project management skills
  • Proven ability to work with people across divisions and around campus to accomplish IT project and goals
  • Ability to communicate effectively about team and services in both written and verbal formats to a variety of audiences
  • Proven record of customer service excellence; ability to inspire service excellence in staff
  • Ability to think critically and propose service and structural changes to improve performance within and between teams
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Ability and desire to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude and understanding of information technology best practices
  • Ability to respond to incidents that occur outside of regular business hours


  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Research Services Manager
    • Two (2) or more years' experience hiring, training, and managing students or staff
    • Familiarity with research labs and / or scientific operations in Higher Education
    • Demonstrated experience and/or training in customer relationships management work
    • Ability to think critically and propose service and structural changes to improve performance within and between teams
    • Knowledge of and ability to use project management skills
    • Familiarity with the technical requirements of compliance with FERPA
    • Ability to respond to incidents that occur outside of regular business hours


    Assistant Director for Research Services
    • Experience with professional development and career advancement of staff
    • Experience with customer relationship management in a professional capacity
    • Advanced business analysis, project management, and/or planning skills or certification
    • Demonstrated excellence in presentation skills on a variety of subjects to diverse audiences
    • Demonstrated capacity for advanced strategic thinking in the area of IT service provision, particularly in Higher Education
    • Familiarity with the technical requirements of compliance with HIPAA or FERPA
    • Familiarity with campus computing environments at Illinois or other Higher Education institution


    This position is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Minimum salaries are as follows: $65,000 for the Research Services Manager; $80,000 for the Assistant Director for Research Services.
