Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Please note: This is a time-limited position.

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The FSU Research Office guides Fayetteville State University's (FSU) implementation of a comprehensive research agenda that I consistent with the university mission of "promoting the educational, social, cultural and economic transformation of southeastern North Carolina and beyond." This office is responsible for increasing externally-funded and internally-funded research at FSU, increasing external funding for research and special programs, strengthening institutional support for research, and identifying appropriate areas of emphasis for research. Because of the growing presence of military installations and resources in North Carolina, the research agenda will emphasis for research and programs that meet the needs of the U.S. Department of Defense. This office reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and is in the unit to which the Office of Sponsored Research and Core Facility reports. As such, this office works collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, and staff throughout the university.

Description of Work Continued:
Knowledge: Professional/Scientific: Knowledge and ability to independently adapt work process and methods based on findings and literature review; may contribute new knowledge and/or techniques. Knowledge of other scientific areas and related research.

Research Design: Gather information to prepare budget and propose estimates for acquisition of supplies and equipment. Plan and design specific quality control measures and procedures as part of research protocol. Collaborate with other to plan and design specific quality control measures and procedures as part of research protocol. Expand scope of literature search to support and/or propose alternative experimental methods, procedures and/or techniques.

Conducting Experiments/Procedures: Ability to analyze and resolve variations in complex tests, experiments and procedures. Ability to design and implement modification and changes to techniques, procedures and quality control measures. Propose alternative research methods, techniques and initiatives. Serve as an expert in a specialized area of research to influence research conclusions.

Data Analysis/Communication: Collaborate in the conception and design of original research. Ability to assist in grant writing and proposal development. Contribute to preparation of publications and/or reports; ability to make presentation within department. Ability to lead, consult and make recommendation in the area of research through effective communication about the research project (s). Define standards for the collection of data; set standards for accuracy, validity and integrity; ability to lead others in analysis. Evaluate documentation of results; modify and adapt research methodologies in collaboration with others. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Laboratory Management: Plan and monitor resources needed to operate the laboratory and maintain inventory control. Evaluate and modify quality assurance procedures. Coordinate and train others to ensure compliance with safety measures and guidelines including those related to hazardous waste/materials.

Instruction: Ability to develop and coordinate instruction of others in the operation of specialized equipment and/or research techniques. Collaborate with research staff and colleagues to validate and/or redirect research based on documented results.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High school and two years of directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge skills and abilities:
Experienced in materials synthesis, materials characterization and variety of analytical techniques is desired.
Experienced in interdisciplinary research involving Biology and Chemistry is highly desired with at least five years, but above ten years is preferred, demonstrated and documented scholarly activities on the following area; materials research, publications with many co-authors, securing resources for conducting advanced research, and leadership in materials is required.
Outstanding writing, analytical and problem solving skills
Knowledge of principles and practices f organization, planning, records management and general administration
Ability to operate equipment. Including but not limited to materials synthesis, processing, and characterization.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively

Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. degree in Material Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or other related disciplines.
Experiences in interdisciplinary research involving Biology and Chemistry is highly desired.
