Research Associate-Fixed Term
Michigan State University is one of the top institutions for plant science research in the world. A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available with Dr. Kevin Childs in the Department of Plant Biology to study the unusual structures of genes in rice. Like the genes in all grasses, rice genes have a bimodal GC distribution and a significant 5' to 3' GC gradient. These features of rice and other grass genes are unlike the genes of most other plant species. High gene GC content and strong negative 5' to 3' gradients in grasses strongly affect codon usage bias and have been shown to influence rates of transcription and translation. This NSF-funded position will focus on the nature of gene structure and GC content on transcription and translation and will also examine how gene structure may relate to responses to abiotic stress in rice. Candidates must have demonstrated molecular biology experience, excellent oral and written communication skills and exceptional attention to detail. A background in stress or general plant physiology will be beneficial. Existing bioinformatics skills are desired, but the ability to learn scripting and bioinformatics techniques is required. The candidates must be strong molecular biologists but will be required to perform all bioinformatics analyses as well.Required Application Materials
