Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Engineering at NC State University. The department actively contributes to the academic, research and extension missions of the University.

Essential Job Duties: This Research Associate will support stormwater management, stream assessment, research and ecological design projects for the Stream Restoration Program within the Biological & Agricultural Engineering Department. This position will work with a team of BAE Department faculty and staff to support goals and objectives of the NCSU Stream Restoration Program ( Duties will include performing field assessments and surveys, design, land use analyses, and modeling work to support stream and stormwater monitoring, assessment and restoration projects. Specifically, this position will visit wetlands, streams and other waterways to collect necessary site and environmental data in order to assess the ecological condition of the site. They will perform topographic survey and conduct GIS-based analysis to prepare maps and data to document and show the site condition. This position will independently prepare engineering models such as HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS to evaluate hydrology, hydraulics and sediment transport. They will develop and prepare engineering design plans using AutoCAD and other relevant tools. Other duties will include (but are not limited to): * Construction management of restoration projects (such as ensuring stream restoration and stormwater projects are built according to the engineering design plans; visiting the project site during construction to check elevations and materials and to working directly with the contractor the funding sponsor's requirements) * Installation and maintenance of surface and groundwater samplers and assisting with data analysis and project reporting * Develop new research and extension projects * Develop grant proposals to fund new research and extension efforts * Develop and prepare extension manuscripts and to assist with developing and writing research manuscripts * Present results of research and demonstration projects * Design methods to support ecological restoration at relevant technical meetings, conferences, and extension training workshops

Minimum Education/Experience: Must possess a Master's degree in Engineering or a related field. Experience in ecological design, stormwater management, stream geomorphology and hydraulics, watershed hydrology, and/or stream restoration design.

Department Required Skills: * Excellent oral and written communication skills. * Ability to work outside for extended periods or an entire day. * Ability to travel remotely overnight.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Experience with a total station and robotic surveying equipment, AutoCAD, GIS, HEC-RAS, field monitoring protocols and technical report writing is preferred.

Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Due to remote field work, this position requires driving a vehicle. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained..
