The Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL) is looking for a communicator who is a topnotch writer also versed in multimedia storytelling and social media outreach, to join its communications team. As a content and social media manager, you'll develop original content about new approaches to teaching, new modes of learning, new online courses and programs, and the future of higher education—for a few different audiences. You will work with the senior director of communications and marketing, and the director of digital marketing and communications to plan and execute outreach strategies. You will be responsible for extending the reach of ideas to educators, as well as driving engagement in new educational opportunities among learners, through a variety of content formats and channels including web, social, and traditional media. You will oversee editorial voice, develop compelling written and video content, lead digital community-building, conduct traditional media outreach, and run data analytics. You will be responsible for liaising with faculty and staff to uncover stories about learning advances, creating videos that highlight faculty knowledge, writing feature stories that illuminate the student learning experience, building community among learners, and reaching out to journalists.

This position is creative as much as it is strategic. Applicants must have professional writing experience, familiarity with audio/video production, and solid knowledge of the current media/social media landscape. Successful candidates will be inquisitive and self-driven, able to plan and execute projects on a timeline, have good instincts for storytelling, exercise good judgment in making decisions, and understand how to analyze and report on data

  • Plan and execute activities to support public relations objectives
  • Manage an editorial calendar
  • Develop, execute and manage multimedia content:
    • Oversee editorial strategy and voice for multiple audiences across channels
    • Develop, execute and oversee written communications, audio and video productions of moderate complexity, including podcasts, presentations, speeches, news stories, web content, talking points, and correspondence, and social media posts from original concept through final implementation with limited oversight
    • Recommend, implement and refine strategies that promote effective digital delivery of content
    • Lead digital community-building:
    • Serve as in-house digital media expert
    • Manage development and implementation of digital community strategy to engage educators and learners
    • Raise awareness of faculty thought leadership
    • Drive participation in educational programs
    • Provide public relations support for audiences that are both internal and external to the university
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders such as program teams and campus partners to achieve program goals and to ensure coordination
  • Assist in developing strategies for brand management, reputation management and issues management of moderate complexity, including managing comments on digital channels
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external collaboration partners
  • May hire, coach and manage staff

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the web, technology, social platforms, and ability to leverage current and future trends
  • Excellent written communication skills, reporting skills, and advanced skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proofreading
  • Capacity to write and synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood
  • Ability to synthesize data
  • Demonstrated problem solver
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with a variety of people
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members, and internal communications groups across campus
  • Experience leading highly-functioning project teams

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated storytelling/writing/multimedia experience
  • Proven success in social media distribution and conducting data analytics
  • Community engagement experience
  • Experience working in an academic or similar teaching/research setting with experts
  • Highly organized; able to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines
  • Demonstrated curiosity and the ability to bring projects to fruition
  • Meticulous attention to detail and proofreading skills
  • Working knowledge of the journalism landscape and key journalists covering academia
  • Basic HTML
  • Strong MS Office suite skills
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro a plus
  • Graphics and video design experience a plus

Certifications and Licenses: None WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Occasional work on evenings, weekends, and flexible shifts
  • May have exposure to high voltage electricity, noise > 80dB TWA, confined spaces, and working at heights above 10 feet
