Occupational Summary

Provide leadership and direction for design and/or construction services in support of DUHS and MC capital projects.

Work Performed
  • Direct, plan and coordinate the review and development of Duke University Health System and Medical Center capital projects. May oversee the planning, development, implementation and oversight of various capital projects and/or programs for Duke clientele.
  • Assist AVP of FPDC in selection process for programming, design, architectural and engineering services retained for production of construction documents, construction supervision, and post occupancy evaluation; ensure construction documentation standards are established and met.
  • Assist AVP of FPDC in liaison between Duke University Health System and Medical Center administration, clinical departments, procurement department, finance department and other support departments.
  • Direct, coordinate, schedule and prioritize work assignments for the planning, design, estimating, and construction projects across multidisciplinary teams of Facility Planning, Design and Construction staff to meet operational needs of Duke client departments.
  • Supervise and train staff for the prosecution of the work. Ensure compliance with Medical Center standards of quality, building code requirements, and requirements of governmental regulating agencies through periodic or routine review of construction.
  • Establish and maintain contact with outside organizations such as governmental agencies, professional organizations, and other educational and patient care institutions.
  • Assist the AVP with environmental graphic way finding issues and projects, including compliance with codes, regulations and Duke Standards.
  • Review, develop and maintain design standards with Duke departments (E&O, DHTS,OIT, FMD) Coordinate with the Assistant Director for Construction, and Assistant Director for Project Controls, in their responsibilities for managing personnel.
  • Participate in management of the office with the AVP of FPDC. Direct various personnel functions for assigned staff including, but not limited to, hiring, training, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.
  • Periodically review and forecast staff needs including training, tools and human resources.
  • Assist in implementing customer service standards and monitoring customer satisfaction with the design and construction process. Provide regular feedback to the office in general regarding customer service.
  • Routinely analyze and present complex financial and/or design concepts and impacts to stakeholders and public agency members. Must be able to elicit decision and support from the highest level administrators with potentially disparate needs.
