Position Summary: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) seeks a Senior Associate Director of the Institute for the Environment (IE). The Senior Associate Director will work in close collaboration with the Director to manage and guide the IE's activities. Core responsibilities include identifying new research foci and multi-organizational environmental research teams to pursue them, developing and fostering a new pan-campus environmental partnership, representing the IE at internal and external environmental events, and managing the overall operation of the IE. Research - Maintain and develop productive relationship with funding agencies that either support or are likely to support IE activities - Convene internal and external working groups to identify new research topics and other issues important to IE. - Assist campus wide environmental researchers with identifying appropriate venues to convey and apply their research findings - Conduct research in area of expertise Capacity building - Develop and foster the new pan-campus environmental partnership with the Director - Build new environmental research programs and develop sustained nodes of research excellence - Grow environmental partnerships with regional research universities, government organizations, and the private sector Management and support - Implement the management framework for IE - optimize the organizational structure of IE personnel and facilitate organizational meetings - Participate in (with the Director and other senior staff) strategic planning for IE operations and growth. - Assist IE Associate Director for Experiential Education with field site planning and operations - Support the Director in required internal and external reporting

Qualification and Experience: Ten years of experience managing and building environmental research programs.
