Job Description   

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the provision of general psychiatric care to eligible NAU affiliated individuals (students, employees and employee spouses).  The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner reports to the Medical Director of Campus Health Services, Medical Services.


  • Provide general psychiatric health care through the evaluation and management of acute, sub-acute and chronic conditions within scope of privileges applied for and granted by the Credentialing and Privileging Committee.
  • Utilize appropriate, diagnostic resources in a cost-effective manner to assist in the evaluation and management of these health conditions.
  • Utilize appropriate, pharmacologic modalities in a cost effective manner to treat identified health conditions.
  • Provide client counseling on health related matters.
  • Provide client education on health-related matters and healthy life-styles.
  • Respond to psychiatric emergencies by assessing client’s condition and determining need for hospitalization.
  • Perform psychiatric evaluations on clients referred by Campus Health Services medical providers, Counseling Center staff or Employee Assistance and Wellness..
  • Assist Counseling Center, Residence Life and Student Life with determining a student’s potential to remain in classes and function independently.
  • Make recommendations to administrative staff as to a student’s potential to harm self or others.
  • Regularly monitor clients who are prescribed psychoactive medications.
  • Work collaboratively with Campus Health Services providers, Counseling Center staff and EAW staff providing regular updates and conferences on joint clients.
  • In conjunction with Counseling Center staff, work collaboratively with the staff of Residence Life and Student Life to provide appropriate information critical to mental health issues of student clients.
  • Participate as needed with crisis team.
  • Participate as time allows with mental health outreach programs.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community mental health providers and agencies.
  • Provide consultant services to other health center personnel.
  • Refer eligible individuals to community specialists when appropriate.
  • Arrange for client care coverage when absent from health center.
  • Document client care related activities in the EHR in a clearly understood manner appropriate for the type of encounter within a reasonable timeframe after the encounter.


  • This full-time psychiatric nurse practitioner position is responsible for (in partnership with the Medical Director) taking the lead in coordinating psychiatric services at CHS. This includes coordinating the duties of the Mental Health Assistant that support the psychiatric staff, coordinating peer review, and representing issues to the Medical Director.
  • Share client care responsibilities in an equitable manner with the remainder of the medical staff.
  • Work collaboratively with all health center personal to ensure efficient client flow, quality care and excellent client satisfaction.
  • Participate in committees, provider meetings and other organizational activities as requested by the Executive Director or Medical Director.
  • Participate in creation, coordination and implementation of policies and procedures as requested by the Executive Director or Medical Director
  • Participate in strategic planning and continuous quality improvement activities as requested by the Executive Director or Medical Director.
  • Participate in the training of Nurse Practitioner or other health care students as requested by the Executive Director or Medical Director.

Minimum Qualifications   

Advanced practice psychiatric nursing degree from an accredited nursing school and licensed to practice as an advanced nurse practitioner in the State of Arizona. The psychiatric nurse practitioner must comply with the requirements for continuing education defined by the Arizona State Board of Nursing.  Board certification as a psychiatric nurse practitioner from a nationally recognized certifying agency.  Current CPR or ACLS training is required.  Remain current in the field of college health and maintain board certification.  Registration with the Drug Enforcement Agency and prescriptive authority required.

Background Information   

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position.  Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following:  a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report.  The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses.  The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

Commensurate with experience

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

FLSA Status   

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan).  New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date.  Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
