Job description


The Associate Dean of Library Services serves as a member of the Library and Learning Support Services leadership team and is responsible for the leadership and coordination of South Texas College Library Services, which includes Circulation Services (Circulation and Reserves), Reference Services, Library Outreach and Instruction Services, and Library Technical Services at all South Texas College campus libraries. The Associate Dean works with the Library and Learning Support Services leadership team to ensure the provision of excellent and efficient patron services and to promote a positive environment which motivates and empowers colleagues, staff, and students. Supervises designated Library Public Services staff.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborates with the Dean and other Directors to provide progressive, team-oriented development.
  2. Provides an environment that fosters personal and professional employee development.
  3. Promotes the delivery of quality information services in a positive, patron-focused and learning-centered environment.
  4. Collaborates with the Dean and other Directors to provide integrated student learning support services.
  5. Provides leadership and support for all aspects of Library Services, including circulation, reserves, reference services, outreach services, technical services, and information literacy instruction for all South Texas College campuses and teaching sites.
  6. Collaborates with the Dean and other leaders to develop and implement strategic and institutional effectiveness plans for the Library Services department aligned to promote student learning and success.
  7. Creates and manages staffing plans to ensure appropriate staff support at each library location in conjunction with the Dean,
  8. In conjunction with the Dean, develops and administers annual budgets for Library Services acquisitions, cataloging, public services, library art gallery, and systems automation.
  9. Directly supervises, trains, coaches, and mentors librarians and other staff at all South Texas College campuses and teaching sites.
  10. Assesses professional development needs and provides professional development and training opportunities for staff to meet job demands and ensures that Library Services full-time and part-time employees are trained appropriately.
  11. Collects and analyzes feedback from stakeholders, including working with faculty and library staff to evaluate existing library resources and developing and executing plans for enhancing them to ensure service quality.
  12. Ensures the provision of outstanding, patron-oriented online and traditional services to support Distance Education and Dual Enrollment students and faculty.
  13. Facilitates the promotion of the library through library events and programming at each campus.
  14. Ensures that the library collection is appropriate to support the College’s curricular offerings.
  15. Oversees library services’ relationships with Accounts Payable, Purchasing and other departments in respect to orders, receipts, payments, and fund accounting.
  16. Oversees the negotiation and management of contracts and licenses for digital information products.
  17. Coordinates with the Purchasing department on competitive bid requests for library information materials and services.
  18. Collaborates with the Dean to set policies and procedures for circulation, reserves, librarian instruction, outreach, collection development, acquisitions, cataloguing, and other library functions.
  19. Ensures that documentation of procedures and procedures manuals are current and up-to-date.
  20. Ensures that library automated systems function appropriately.
  21. Participates in a variety of departmental, campus, regional and statewide committees and represents library services’ issues, ideas, and concerns, as appropriate.
  22. Maintains current knowledge of developments in library science and other related fields
  23. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:

  1. American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science and/or Information Science required.
  2. At least seven (7) years of library experience with progressively increasing levels of responsibility in management and administration required.
  3. Recent academic library experience, preferred.


Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

  1. All applicants are subject to a national criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  2. Security Sensitive position: In addition, subject to federal background check.
  3. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and proof of liability insurance.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  2. Strong background in computers and office automation, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, Excel, PowerPoint and knowledge of the Windows environment
  3. Thorough knowledge of current library trends and practices.
  4. Demonstrated managerial and leadership ability.
  5. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper course of action.
  6. Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
  7. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
  8. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  9. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from faculty, students, staff and regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  10. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals, speeches, and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  11. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of top management, students, other employees, customers, public groups and/or boards of trustees.
  12. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  13. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instruction and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


Physical Requirements:

  1. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  2. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  3. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  4. Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  5. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  6. Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  7. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  8. Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
  9. Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  10. Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
