Biosafety Officer - Office of the Vice Provost for Research-18001242

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) is responsible for the administration of grants and contracts, management of the University’s intellectual property, implementation of policies on conflict of interest and misconduct of research and provides oversight of the use of human subjects, animals used for research or training, and biohazardous agents. The OVPR collaborates with members of the faculty and other administrative officers to assure that all legal and regulatory requirements are achieved.

The Biosafety Officer will report to the Biosafety Manager in the OVPR. The Biosafety Officer will provide technical and regulatory support in the area of biological safety for Tufts University. The core functions of this position will be to perform risk assessment and regulatory assessment of all scientific research and teaching activities involving biohazardous materials registered with the Institutional Biosafety Committee and to assist the scientific community at Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center (Tufts MC) in properly registering the work with the IBC. Other duties will include partnering with the other regulatory and support offices at Tufts University for oversight of biohazardous materials, as well as interacting with the scientific community at Tufts and Tuft MC in a support capacity.

Basic Requirements:
  • Master of Science in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or related discipline.
  • 1-3 years working in the Biosafety field in a capacity that included application of the NIH Guidelines and BMBL to research activities.
  • A working knowledge of molecular biology, biohazard-related risk assessment, and interpretation of the NIH Guidelines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be committed to working as a member of a team.
  • Must be familiar with standard laboratory procedures and operations in order to converse with researchers and provide relevant guidance.
  • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office and standard office software, performing literature searches and BLAST searches as well as interpreting the results of those searches.
  • Must be able to travel between campuses.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • RBP or CBSP preferred.
  • Experience writing and reviewing registrations for an IBC strongly recommended.
  • 1-3 years bench experience strongly recommended.
  • 1-3 years of experience with animal biosafety practices and procedures preferred.
  • Strong presentation and technical training skills preferred.
