Description

This is a limited term for 1 year.

The Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) provides facilities, services, and information to facilitate effective research using laboratory animals at Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center in Boston including the Surgical and Interventional Research Laboratories (SIRL), and Tufts University in Medford. DLAM is also obligated to insure that animal care procedures and animal experimentation comply with federal, state, and local regulations. The management and operation of the animal care activities of all sites are integral to the animal care and use program. All centralized facilities are located within a 2-block radius, either in Boston or Medford.

Responsible for providing clinical and surgical veterinary medical care in support of the animals housed within DLAM. Follows and implements all DLAM policies. Monitors and reports on matters of compliance with regards to applicable federal, state, institutional and departmental regulations within the animal care program.

The position requires surgical and anesthesia proficiency in a variety of laboratory animal species and animal models. Independently, or under general supervision of the DLAM veterinarians, coordinate the scheduling and general operation of the research surgical facilities; induce and monitor general anesthesia in laboratory animals; perform surgery; provide assistance and veterinary support to postoperative animals; assist investigative staff with experimental procedures, anesthesia, pre-, intra- and postoperative care and monitoring; and provide veterinary services to animals. Provides care to laboratory animals maintained with DLAM. Additional responsibilities may include model development, protocol development, client interaction and consultation, as well as providing mentorship/collaboration/training to/with internal and external investigators and their research staff. The job may include indirect supervision of veterinary and surgical research technicians. Actively participates in interdepartmental training and continuing education seminars. Evening, early morning and weekend work including overtime may be required. On-call including weeknights and weekends may be required.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
  • Required education: DVM/VMD from an AVMA accredited university or equivalent (ECFVG or PAVE).
  • Veterinary licensure in at least one state with MA preferred.
  • Knowledge in laboratory animal medicine including anesthesia and surgery in a variety of small and large species.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and use of email.
  • Must have demonstrated productivity and effective interpersonal skills; and have the ability to work effectively and professionally with others.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to travel to the Medford campus as needed.
  • The individual must be capable of functioning independently with minimal supervision.
  • Detail oriented and superb organization skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • The candidate will ideally have some experience in a research support environment and regulations governing animal research.
  • Knowledge in laboratory animal medicine and regulations governing animals used in biomedical research.
  • Experience in laboratory animal medicine preferred.
  • Strong clinical, anesthesia, and surgical skills in a variety of laboratory animal species and animal models including rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats, dogs, guinea pigs, rodents, and other species.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Evening, early morning and weekend work including overtime may be required. On-call including weeknights and weekends may be required.
