Description

As stewards of Tufts University’s physical environment, the Department of Facilities Services, a department within the university’s Operations Division, strives to provide responsive and cost-effective solutions that support our research and learning mission as well as to enhance the quality of our living and learning experience. Facilities Services is responsible for the maintenance and management of all university grounds and facilities consisting of approximately 5 million square feet of space across four campuses (Somerville/Medford, Grafton, Boston and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts).

Within Facilities Services, a broad range of services are provided to support the university campuses including: facility management and maintenance, engineering, custodial services, energy and utilities systems planning and operations, recycling and waste management, event support and grounds aesthetics and maintenance.

Related departments, which require close coordination with Facilities Services, include the Operations Center, Capital Programs and Public and Environmental Health & Safety.

Reporting to the Director of Campus Services, the Labor and Waste Operations Manager directly manages a crew of labor, utility and grounds workers in the performance of solid waste and recycling support, event support, small internal campus moves, snow removal and sanding operations, and general grounds services including storm drain maintenance and parking lot maintenance. The Labor and Waste Operations Manager also oversees the vehicle maintenance technician and operations that ensure the upkeep and repair of university vehicles including trucks, vans and heavy equipment. Under the guidance of the Director, this position is also responsible for the on-site management of the Medford campus pest control, solid waste and recycling contracts and ongoing operations. Candidate must be able to work independently and collaboratively with facilities grounds and trades personnel, and outside contractors. The Labor and Waste Operations Manager is responsible for training and managing staff to ensure performance quality and to ensure that administrative procedures, systems and processes are adhered to. This position works collaboratively with the Grounds Manager and Events Coordinator, frequently sharing labor based on workload.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:


  • Two-year Associate’s Degree in Facilities Management and/or Environmental Management or related field or a combination of a High School diploma with a minimum of 5 years’ solid waste operations experience.


  • Demonstrated supervisory experience in a union environment.
  • Progressive leadership and management skills.
  • Experience managing a cost center in accordance with budgetary expectations.
  • Experience and knowledge pertaining to various types of vehicle repair and service maintenance protocols.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to foster effective working relationships at all levels.
  • Comfortable working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Maximo or comparable work order management system experience ranging from accurate work-order entry skills to the ability to run reports, interpret data and identify trends and management directives.
  • Self-starter focused on continuous improvements and executing transformative change.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Job related experience at an institute of higher education or comparable campus-based facility.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Facilities Management, business or related field.
  • Experience with conflict resolution, labor/management grievance protocol.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Tuesday – Saturday, 7:30am – 4:00pm. Flexibility in work schedule required due to campus related emergencies, events occurring nights and weekends and special events such as matriculation and commencement.
