    • 11 days per year (0-5 years)

  • This position receives specific holidays and Board-granted days off with pay as determined by the holiday schedule (see CSEA 8.7.1 (Download PDF reader)). This position also receives sick leave of one day per month of employment.
  • Current position work schedule:Monday~Thursday 7:30 am~5:00 pm, Friday 8:00 am~12:00 pmWork schedules may vary dependent upon District need and may include work on weekends, holidays and on-call shifts.

OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of an administrator, performs preventive maintenance and makes major and minor repairs of buses and other District vehicles; operates a bus and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the journey level class in the Transportation Mechanic series. Positions in this class perform the full range of duties under general supervision, and may be assigned specialized or more complex assignments requiring advanced skill. All positions assigned to the class work independently, exercising judgment and initiative within general guidelines in performing the full range of duties assigned to this classification.



Representative Duties:

The duties recorded below are representative of the duties of the class and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by incumbent(s) of any particular position. The essential duties of the class are indicated with an asterisk *.

  1. Performs complex mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on diesel, gasoline and electric vehicles, and related equipment*
  2. Diagnoses malfunctions and performs complex mechanical work including overhauling engines, transmissions, fuel systems, differentials, wheel cylinders and brakes; installs rings, rods, valves and main bearings; repairs lighting systems; diagnoses and repairs electronic fuel injection systems, computers and sensors*
  3. Tunes engines; adjusts points, condensers, timing, carburetors, valves, clutches and brakes*
  4. Lubricates motorized equipment; cleans and replaces oil filters; charges batteries and mounts, balances and repairs tires of all types*
  5. Welds and fabricates parts as needed*
  6. Services and repairs air conditioning systems*
  7. Performs minor body repairs and painting; reupholsters bus seats*
  8. Prepares vehicles to pass the State Smog Check Program; performs vehicle emission inspections*
  9. Operates a computer to perform data entry, access email and District announcements, etc*
  10. Assists in keeping records of repairs and maintenance work; assists in obtaining parts and supplies
  11. As needed, drives buses and other motorized vehicles; operates semi-truck and trailer and other trucks to haul equipment to and from campus
  12. Performs duties in accordance with all department policies and procedures, including safety regulations
  13. May serve on a variety of District committees as requested
  14. May perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications/Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • The completion of a formal trade apprenticeship program; OR
  • Associate's Degree in automotive technology or a related field or the equivalent*; AND
  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or the equivalent**.
*Associate's Degree education equivalency equals two (2) years of increasingly responsible work experience for each full year (24-30 units) of college.

**High school education equivalency equals an adult education diploma or four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
(To be maintained throughout duration of employment with the District.)
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain within the first 6-months of employment, a valid school bus driver's certificate.
  • Medical certificate as required for operation of a bus.
  • Provide a current DMV H-6 (issued within previous 30-days) showing valid Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC).
  • First Aid and CPR Certificates; (if you do not have valid First Aid and CPR certificates, you will be required to obtain them within the first 6-months of employment.)
  • As a condition of employment, applicants must pass a required pre-employment drug and alcohol test and all subsequent Department of Transportation random drug and alcohol testing.

  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity and sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience and training in automotive electronic systems, medium / heavy duty truck / bus maintenance and repair and in compressed natural gas vehicle systems.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • California Smog Technicians License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
May be acquired through education, training and/or experience.

Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; safe driving practices; California Motor Vehicle and Education Codes applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students, staff and faculty; tools, parts, equipment and methods used in maintaining and repairing trucks, buses and other motorized vehicles; preventative maintenance and methods of lubricating and servicing vehicles; tools and test equipment required to diagnose electrical and mechanical defects in motorized vehicles; exhaust emission control systems; computer usage and associated software.
Ability to: diagnose and perform routine to complex repairs of vehicles; skillfully and safely use tools and equipment; clean, lubricate, and service automotive vehicles rapidly and thoroughly; prepare repair estimates and keep accurate maintenance records; drive a bus and other automotive equipment safely and efficiently; follow oral and written instructions; work cooperatively with others and in a team environment; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work; maintain shop in safe and clean manner; learn and interpret the rules, regulations and policies and procedures of the District and those affecting departmental operations; effectively operate a computer to perform position functions; utilize keyboarding skills commensurate with the required functions for this position; demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to, and the understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.



Supplemental Information:

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No assigned permanent staff to supervise.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Performs physically demanding work in moving heavy objects in the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment and vehicles.

CONTACTS:
Faculty, staff, administrators, students and the general public.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Tasks require occasionally moving heavy objects (50 to 100 lbs), exposure to weather and temperature extremes, machinery hazards, intense noise from machinery, poor lighting, electric currents, toxic agents and fumes, working in confined spaces, traffic hazards.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  1. The successful applicant will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire and must agree to undergo and pass a pre-employment physical examination, based on the physical requirements of the position, prior to employment. The physician will be selected and paid for by the District. Disabilities not related to the essential physical job requirements will not preclude the applicant from being hired.
  2. Education Code § 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that he or she is free of active tuberculosis.
  3. As a condition of employment the position you are applying for will require that you provide fingerprints to the local police department. The fee charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the fingerprint report is the employee's responsibility.
