Position Summary:

Willamette University invites applicants for a one-year visiting position in German, beginning August 2018. MA required, PhD preferred.

Willamette is a small, highly selective private university located in Salem, Oregon, the state capital, which lies 45 miles south of Portland. Of the university's 2500 total students, 1900 are enrolled in our undergraduate College of Liberal Arts. Willamette believes that a diverse, inclusive community is essential to achieving academic excellence; accordingly, we seek candidates who not only have the potential to become outstanding teachers and scholars, but also whose work furthers equity and inclusion, and who will bring to campus varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds. The CLA enrolls a substantial number of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students of color. Over the past two years, 22% of our students were first-generation; 24% were Pell-eligible; and 26% identified as African American, Hispanic/LatinX, Native American/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or of two or more ethnic backgrounds.

The Department of German and Russian currently has two tenure-line faculty members, and two full-time visitors; about 2 students per year graduate with a German major, and 5 with a German minor. All professors at Willamette are expected to teach non-majors as well as majors and to contribute to the College's General Education curriculum; specific teaching responsibilities for this position include all four semesters of first and second-year German language. Candidates should have a strong commitment to excellent teaching in a liberal arts setting. The department seeks candidates with broad intellectual interests, a commitment to innovative pedagogy, and interest in participating in the intellectual life of the university.

Applicants should submit a cover letter addressing their ability to teach and work in a liberal arts environment. Also include a curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy, including methods of creating an inclusive classroom; and names and contact information for three professional references, at least two of whom can evaluate teaching. Submit application documents via the Willamette jobs website: Consideration of applications will begin immediately, and continue until the position is filled.
