Description of Responsibilities:
The Mentor-Scholar Coordinator will collaborate with school district faculty and staff to coordinate support programming within the Red Creek, Fulton, and Citi (CARE and Central Square) for “at-risk” district students to foster improved school connectedness and higher graduation rates.
The Coordinator will support SUNY Oswego students in their role as mentors while providing opportunities for growth in leadership, community engagement, professionalism and will support the Center for Experiential Learning in service learning and experiential learning initiatives.
Additionally, the Mentor-Scholar Coordinator also:
- Coordinates, develops, monitors, and acts as site liaison for Mentor-Scholar partnerships with Red Creek Central School District, Fulton City School District, Citi (central square) and CiTi CARE Programs
- Builds supportive relationships with mentees and mentors to encourage participation and commitment to the program
- Initiates and oversees applications for mentor program
- Works with principals to interview and select mentees
- Assesses program impact and goals
- Troubleshoots site issues pertaining to attendance, match quality, session facilitation
- Meets regularly with the student support team at each of the program sites to discuss individual students and most appropriate interventions.
- Recruits program participants as necessary depending on site - district and undergraduates
- Serves as point person for family communication regarding program applications, policies, and procedures as needed.
- Manages program tracking initiatives, assessment, and quality assurance
- Coordinates with other team members on event planning and facilitation
- Develops curriculum and teaches GST 311 for Mentors in assigned sites
- Co-teaches GST 312
- Supports Mentor-Scholar sessions and initiatives across all sites
- Participates on campus committees
- Grant identification and writing as needed
- Monitors budget alongside CEL Supervisor
In addition, will be expected to display a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship, commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.
- Master’s Degree in education or related field by time of appointment
- Experience in teaching, mentoring or service learning
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Planning, organizing, and multi-tasking skills as required during project implementation
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively interact with a diverse population of students
- Two years’ experience facilitating partnerships within the community
- Two years’ experience in project management or program coordination
- Proven effectiveness assessing student data and evaluating mentor performance

The Mentor-Scholar program was developed in 2011 as a response to retention initiatives in the community and continues to be a partnership between SUNY Oswego, area school districts, and AmeriCorps VISTA. Via one-on-one relationships, mentors provide both academic tutoring as well as the motivation necessary for each mentee to achieve their personal potential. As well, another purpose is to provide an opportunity for SUNY Oswego undergraduates to help improve their community and gain knowledge useful in their future careers and lives. The Mentor-Scholar Program is located within the Center for Experiential Learning. The Center for Experiential Learning focuses on promoting all aspects of experiential learning. The Center offers a variety of experiential learning opportunities to SUNY Oswego undergraduate and graduate students.
