Adjunct Instructor/Lecturer: Social Entrepreneurship and Social Change


The School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is soliciting part-time adjunct instructor/lecturer for the BSW program to teach one course of SOCW 321: Social Entrepreneurship and Social Change starting Fall 2018. This course prepares students to create programs and products that have social values for communities. It features social entrepreneurship as an approach to social development and considers its application and related change strategies to a wide array of social problems. The initial part of the class will emphasize instructing students in broad concepts and principles related to entrepreneurship, while the latter portion of the course will feature students working on teams to design social projects.

The Adjunct Search Committee will screen applicants to determine whether they are a good fit for our program. If approved by the Adjunct Search Committee, applicants will be placed in a pool of potential adjunct instructor/lecturers. Becoming a member of the pool does not guarantee an appointment, but does ensure consideration for adjunct teaching opportunities based on the needs of the School of Social Work.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Preparation for class (approximately 2 hours per week per course)
  • Teaching (50 minutes 3x/week)
  • Grading required coursework
  • office hours (2 hours per week per course)
  • Adapt a course syllabus from the master syllabus that will be provided to the applicant
  • Participate in the annual Adjunct Orientation and Teaching Workshop and in additional training and mentoring sessions as needed

All new instructor/lecturers should plan to attend an Adjunct Orientation and Teaching Workshop, which is held once a year at the School of Social Work in Urbana.

Minimum Requirements:
  • A master's degree in social work (preferred) or other social or family science area.
  • Prior relevant teaching at the college level or training experience
  • Proven track record of social entrepreneurship activities
