PhD required in science, education, or other relevant field



Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

The individual must have at least three years of relevant job experience with increasing responsibility,preferably in an academic environment. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable:instruction, program development/management, student leadership development, undergraduatestudent services, student affairs, orientation, first-year experience programs and/or science education.
Required:
-One year of teaching experience beyond the teaching assistant level, or equivalent experience,preferably with science undergraduates
-Knowledge of student development and/or leadership theories
-Demonstrated experience successfully developing, managing, evaluating and sustainingcomplex, interdisciplinary educational programs and collaborations, preferably in a highereducation environment, for various populations
-Experience working with diverse populations, especially with underrepresented minority collegestudents, first-generation college students and transfer students; knowledge of common issuesand appropriate teaching/learning approaches for these groups
-Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills asevidenced through: demonstrating self-awareness; understanding and valuing others;demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with a diversity of people;fostering equity and inclusion.
-Demonstrated ability to mentor students and/or experience with peer leadership or mentoringprograms
-High energy, initiative, and zest for creative problem-solving
-Proven track record of successful personnel management and team building
-Excellent interpersonal skills and professional oral, written and presentation skills

Position Summary:

The mission of WISCIENCE is to collaborate with educators and scientists to provide resources andprogramming that improve the teaching and learning of science and increase access to quality scienceDRAFTlearning experiences, both formal and informal. The Director of First-Year and Retention Programs inScience is responsible for programs and courses to support first-and second-year UW-Madisonundergraduates in science, with a particular emphasis on serving underrepresented minorities, firstgenerationcollege and transfer students. The person in this position will direct the IMPACT Peer LeaderProgram and associated course; the STEM Immersion and Transfer STEM Immersion OrientationPrograms for incoming students, and develop and teach other related courses. All programs and courseswill be closely coordinated with the programming and goals of the Division of Diversity, Equity, andEducational Achievement and other programs and offices serving underrepresented student groups inthe schools and colleges across campus.
