About the Position
The Academic Advisor works independently to provide academic advising and related student academic support services for students in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts. Position responsibilities may include providing accurate, timely, and consistent advising to students on academic requirements and procedures; connecting students to appropriate resources on campus; supervising peer advisors and tutors; and providing support and assistance to students facing a variety of personal as well as institutional problems, questions and challenges. Working with the Student Success Center team and AARS, the incumbent provides professional advising support for recruiting and orienting new students, and supports University initiatives on retention and success through graduation.
Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a jobrelated field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
A masters degree in a jobrelated field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
-Master's degree in an academic advising-related field
-Two years of experience in progressively responsible professional
-Demonstrated knowledge of, sensitivity to, and experience in working with ethnically and culturally diverse student populations as well as low-income and first generation college students
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
-Ability to advise students individually and in groups on academic success strategies; general knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
-Experience with and sensitivity to working with diverse student populations and first-generation college students.
-Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
-General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
-Ability to analyze complex situations and adopt effective courses of action.
-Excellent problem-solving and interpersonal interaction skills.
-Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, staff, and faculty in a diverse and fast-paced environment.
-Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
-Ability to be flexible, and prioritize work tasks.
-Knowledge of software applications including word processing, spreadsheet, and database management.
-Ability to quickly learn and effectively apply software and virtual applications and other resources used at SJSU to support student success.
-Ability to accurately disseminate detailed information.
-Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
-Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality requirements and other ethical standards.
-Ability to plan and conduct small-scale workshops and make effective presentations to groups.
-Ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make recommendations based on these data.
-Strong written and oral communication skills and excellent work ethic.
