NSOE Central Admin

Lead a comprehensive and integrated professional development center. Under the umbrella of the career and professional development center (CPDC), the Director defines and implements the vision and strategy for career services, professional development and executive education (EE); leveraging the synergies across these functions for a cohesive and integrated center.
The CPDC is within the Nicholas School of the Environment's Student Services Office. The Office consists of master's degree programs (Master of Environmental Management, Master of Forestry, a distance learning master's program), EE, student administration, undergraduate programming, and the CPDC. The student body consists of professional, undergraduate and doctoral students located at the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort, NC and in Durham. Position reports to Associate Dean of Student Services.

Employer Relations & Engagement
  • Establish a robust employer engagement strategy for career development, internships, employment opportunities, and executive education programs. Increase engagement of new employers aligned with the goals of the School as well as the competencies and interests of students. Cultivate relationships, leading to the generation of employer partnerships, internships, and EE programs. Enhance relationships with existing employer partners. Develop a communications plan.
  • Create comprehensive employer database and networking program across professional interests, sector. Collaborate with Office of Development and Alumni Relations and faculty to identify synergies and leverage initiatives to maintain a cohesive approach.
  • Maintain liaison with educational and professional organizations to explore implementation of specialized career and education programs.
  • Maintain current career resource library and potential employer files.
  • Conduct and participate in studies and surveys to address placement trends, employment opportunities and needs, and salaries; prepare related reports and analyses.
  • Plan career seminars by alumni and professionals. Bring employers to campus to inform and recruit students.
  • Collaborate with Communications and Marketing to develop appropriate and effective communication strategy to promote the School's offerings related to career and internship opportunities, employer engagement, and professional development.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of internship programs and relationships.
Career Development & Services
  • Sets strategic direction for services delivery, career coaching and programming. Plans and expands programs to ensure quality of skills in career decision-making and self-marketing strategies, including job searching, networking, resume and cover letter prep, interview techniques, and employment assessment. Ensure offerings are competitive to similar programs.
  • Maintain alumni career development, in collaboration with ODAR and EE.
  • Ensure website is relevant and reflective of services. Collaborate with Communications to promote career programming, employment and internship programs.
  • Provide counseling, coaching and advising, as needed.
  • Create a safe environment based on confidentially, trust, and follow-through.
Professional Development & Executive Education
  • Position Duke Environment as a globally recognized resource for environmental EE experiences to launch new offerings and expand current programming, online and in-person, and at DUML. Sets the strategic direction for the development of a variety of professionally-oriented programs, custom non-degree and open enrollment courses on a local, regional or national basis.
  • Identify new partners and or custom course contracts for longer-term relationships and revenue streams. Identify opportunities to create online executive education-style programming to current master's students and alumni under the professional development umbrella. Programming should be in sync with the School's strategic plan for EE.
  • Participate in the preparation of curriculum and identification of instructors. Develop relationships with faculty around the University to identify academic interests and integrate their input. Identify joint-educational programs with other Schools, as appropriate.
  • Engage the executive education advisory council in guiding strategic planning
  • Collaborate with Communications to develop strategy to promote EE.
Collaboration & Administration
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean and across student services functions. Serve as a leader within the Student Services team.
  • Build relationships across campus, including colleagues in Duke's professional schools, the University Career Center, executive education programs, faculty, staff, alumni and student groups to promote best practices and collaboration. Represent the School and interests at environmental conferences or meetings.
  • Serve as a contributing member of the School's Education Committee, university-wide career center committees, and other strategic opportunities.
  • Determine fiscal requirements; monitor expenditure of budgeted funds. Manage internship funding.
  • Hire, train, evaluate and supervise staff, including career counselors, exec ed coordinators, instructors, student assistants, etc.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree with six years of professional experience in career program implementation; OR, content-relevant master's degree with six years of professional experience in an environmental field. Higher education experience is preferred. Supervisory experience required.
Direct experience or substantive knowledge of careers in the environmental field and associated employers.
Demonstrated proficiency in growing contacts meaningfully; use networks to identify internship, employer, and professional dev opportunities.
Experience in executive, continuing ed, or outreach programs. Demonstrated knowledge of adult and active learning principles, curriculum development, LMS's, and/or online delivery.
Ability to serve as advocate and coalition-builder, particularly with a range of diverse communities including students, faculty and leaders
Experience in developing workshops related to career and professional development or environmental topics.
Experience in developing and facilitating contracts
Technologically adept and strong background using data to assist with strategy and decision-making
Effective delegator; skilled at empowering/trusting employees as well as sharing responsibility and accountability
Skilled innovator; demonstrates good judgement in identifying creative/novel ideas, able to bring ideas to fruition
Results driven; successfully meets/exceeds goals
Ability to manage difficult conversations, relationships, etc. that require thoughtful and effective communication, verbal and written.

Able to work evening, weekend hours periodically, and travel 5-6 weeks per year.
