Occupational Summary
  • Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting laboratory tests, experiments and determinations in support of Duke University research operations.
  • Perform a variety of tasks necessary to maintain a colony of laboratory mice, including breeding mice, weaning mice, collecting small tissue biopsies from live mice, isolating DNA from tissue biopsies, and determining mouse genotypes using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method.
  • Collect and prepare tissues from euthanized rodents for histological analyses, enzymatic assays, and RNA/protein isolation.
  • Perform a variety of assays to assess gene expression and other physiological parameters in mouse blood and tissues and in cultured cells, including RNA and protein isolation, quantitative reverse-transcription PCR, immunoblotting, and enzymatic assays.
  • Determine and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests
  • Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions.
  • Review work of laboratory personnel within designated areas and assist in training new personnel.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Education, Skills, & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, or related field
  • Research experience involving mouse work is a plus
  • Must be detail-oriented, very well organized, and approach laboratory procedures with critical thinking of the technical aspects
  • Strong initiative and eagerness to learn
  • Must adhere to strict safety requirements
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a dynamic group environment.
This is an ideal entry level position for a recent college graduate with an interest in pursuing graduate or professional education (e.g. medical school) in the future.
