Working/Functional Title

Network Engineer III

Position Summary

Work with team members and stakeholders to operate and troubleshoot large Layer2 and Layer3 wired and wireless networks. Generate service quality reports based on relevant criteria for a wide range of audiences; monitor to affirm the network service is meeting service level agreements and co-construct improvement plans with Infrastructure design teams as necessary. Maintain network performance by collaborating with users to identify challenges and improve user experience while providing thoughtful customer service. Work to develop trouble ticket, change management, project management, and work flow procedures utilizing existing service and change management procedures to reduce impacts to the user community. Assist with the development and maintenance of network documentation. Understand the need to support 24/7 operations by being part of the MSU IT on-call support community. Willingness to coordinate network changes within maintenance windows outside normal 8-5 business hours.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; and five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Technical certifications including CCNA or equivalent. Familiarity with ITIL fundamentals. Experience with change management and documentation. Ability to document proposed solutions, problems, and existing designs. InfoBlox DDI experience. Experience working in large public higher education institutions. Experience with BGP and OSPF. Ability to work and excel in a team based environment.
