Working/Functional Title

Campus Arborist

Position Summary

This position will make daily decisions for the budgeting, planning and execution of the Tree Management Plan for campus; provide supervision, leadership, coordination of Arborist crews to complete maintenance projects, and training in all areas of the materials, tools, equipment, and Arboricultural methods; determine vendors through MSU bidding procedures, acquiring quotes, inspecting contractor work areas and processing invoice payments; communicate effectively via email/iPad/iPhone; maintaining electronic and paper records on materials and equipment used by Infrastructure, Planning, and Facilities employees, faculty conducting research projects, and contractors performing services for MSU; research and recommend the purchase of new or improved tools, equipment, and methods for tree maintenance; conduct equipment and tool safety training to ensure the safety of the staff, customers, and visitors;  interview, hire, and train all assigned personnel; participate in the MSU snow removal plan as a snow supervisor or operator to clear snow in an emergency; participate in football barricades and cleanup and other activities as a supervisor or operator in an emergency.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired in by completing a four-year college degree program in arboriculture, horticulture or landscape architecture, Urban Forestry, and/or Landscape Horticulture Maintenance with course work in Personnel Management; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience supervising and leading arborist maintenance crews, pesticide application, plant identification; expert work experience with the procedures of operating a chipper, Hi Ranger, sprayer, articulated loader; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience developing and deploying a tree care management plan; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; possession of the ISA Arborist Certification or equivalent; and two years experience commercial snow removal processes; possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicators certification in category Ornamental (3B) and Right of Way (6);  possession of a valid Michigan Class B Commercial Driver's License and medical certificate to comply with State of Michigan requirements. Applicant must have a good driving record and submit their operator's license number on their application form for a motor vehicle check. Attainment of Air Brakes endorsement within six months of hire date; Attainment of the International Society of Arboriculture Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (ISA TRAQ) and Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicators certification in category Mosquito (7F) within one year of employment.

Desired Qualifications

5+ years of experience as a foreman or supervisor of a tree crew; expert knowledge of Michigan State University tree maintenance processes and procedures, successful track record of leading tree maintenance crews; 5+ years of experience operating chipper, Hi Ranger, tractors, sprayers and articulated loaders; 5+ years of experience supervising full time staff and seasonal staff, conducting daily work plans, tool and equipment training, and conducting employee reviews; experience with Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, FAMIS, EBS, and Discoverer; Ability to coach and lead employees to be successful, create an environment of teamwork and dedication, and support a culture of high performing customer service; experience and knowledge of Infrastructure Planning and Facilities and/or facilities management structure, processes, and procedures.

Work Hours

6:00am to 2:30pm Position will require significant overtime to oversee snow and ice removal operations on an on-call, 24-hour weekly rotation basis during emergency weather conditions in order to ensure the continuation
