Systems Administrator - Intermediate - Backups Administrator

Nature of Work

Primary administrator and architect of the infrastructure which constitutes the University’s physical and virtual backup system. This infrastructure includes physical and virtual hardware and appliances and software and applications required to implement and operate the backup infrastructure.Must have experience and knowledge of both VMware virtual environment and virtual enterprise backup infrastructure, including but not limited to virtual backup clients (VEEAM), storage nodes, SANappliances, and replication devices. Analyze inefficiencies in the enterprise from backups and restore view and ensure that the infrastructure is in keeping with best practices and the University System of Georgia’s requirements. Participate in the building, installing and troubleshooting servers and hosts with Linux, WIndows, and other OS systems on both physical and virtual hosts. Ability to analyze problems independently, research potential technical solutions, evaluates alternatives, and present recommendations to other departments in ITS and across the campus. Standard System Administrator Duties: Participate in the teams responsible for server automation. Provide and document Information assets necessary to manage IT processes which includes documentation, asset inventory, system information, warranty/service information, service requests, knowledge base entries, project management instruments Develops and implements standards, processes, controls, and systems necessary to protect information assets from dangers to integrity, security, or availability, to specific requirements Including monitoring, automated notification and response systems, practices and procedures, hardware and software solutions, and documentation. Provides assistance and guidance in the patching and upgrading of servers in response to vulnerability scans and security advisors concerning security vulnerabilities and breaches. This includes providing process and procedures in the form of written documentation and run book entries in order to ensure that University devices are kept secure

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in an IT related field, or a 2 year degree in an IT related field from an accredited technical college and 3 years related experience. Must have at least 3 years full-time work experience in enterprise systems administration working with either Windows or Unix/Linux OS systems. Life cycle management from initial system specification to hardware installation, software configuration, security administration, and systems documentation. Knowledge of shell scripting, experience with TCP/IP networking systems. Must have at least one year on the job experience with virtualization software such as VMware or Hyper-V and understand the concepts of virtual snapshots and backing up of a virtual environment. Recognize problems by identifying abnormalities; reporting violations. Implements security improvements by assessing current situation; evaluating trends; anticipating requirements. Determines security violations and inefficiencies by conducting periodic audits. Keeps users informed by communicating system status. Must have good written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Conduct ongoing security risk assessments including the monitoring, investigation and reporting of security and access violations.

Salary $54,216 (minimum) to $74,208 (midpoint) Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

This position will work four ten-hour days (4 × 10) Tuesday thru Friday from 2:00 pm till 12:00 am. This position must be able to lift 40 pounds and work under somewhat adverse conditions at times. Office environment. This position is expected to comply with the University’s standard working hours. In addition, this position must be available outside of normal working hours, including nights and weekends, to complete routine maintenance, or respond to emergency system outages.
