Cataloging Technician IV - University Libraries
The University of Denver Libraries, comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, a remote storage facility called the Hampden Center, and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center, is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population, ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. This full-time position reports to the Coordinator of Cataloging and Metadata Services Librarian, performs the highest-level cataloging, and is responsible for a variety of library tasks including complex edit, adaptive, and original cataloging in all formats. This position possesses an advanced understanding of cataloging rules, standards and the ability to interpret overall library policy and procedures. Ability to resolve complex cataloging issues; contributes analysis and quality assessment of vendor supplied records; works independently to solve problems. Participates as a member of the Cataloging department and serves as a resource to staff regarding the application of national and local cataloging policies and procedures to specific situations. This position also works closely with the Curator of Special Collections, subject-specialist librarians and other staff to create enhanced bibliographic access to materials.
- Performs complex edit, adaptive, and original cataloging in all formats using a variety of resources in a multi-system, networked environment, and/or contributes to national bibliographic or authority databases.
- Serves as a consultant to cataloging technicians and hourly library assistants to interpret cataloging rules, developing work standards and monitoring work quality and flow.
- Working independently, recognizes, identifies and solves problems related to bibliographic records and attached records including item records and may include order records.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge and understanding of current cataloging rules, standards and practices, including RDA, AACR2, MARC format, LCSH, LCC, and local cataloging practices and procedures.
- Works on special projects related to cataloging and database maintenance, including analysis and quality assessment of vendor supplied records, and contributes to best practices for batch-loading of records.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of cataloging rules, standards, and practices with the ability to resolve complex cataloging problems.
- Because the library acquires materials in a variety of foreign languages, foreign language ability is an advantage.
- Strong interpretive, and decision-making skills are needed to select and download appropriate records, to apply cataloging rules and practices correctly, and to ensure that records are accurately edited and fully accessible to patrons.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; attention to detail; and ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively as a team member.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Previous library experience including thorough knowledge with online database systems such as OCLC, and cataloging standards and practices such as AACR2, RDA, and LCSH.
- 3-5 years cataloging experience
- Familiarity with the Ex Libris Alma library services platform.
- Some college-level coursework.
- Familiarity with the Library of Congress Classification.
- Experience cataloging specialized materials, especially musical scores.
- Experience with batch-record load processes and programs such as MarcEdit.
Monday - Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
