Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) is a non-partisan public policy organization that exists to enhance North Carolina's long-term prosperity. As a unit of North Carolina State University, IEI advances the University's research, service, and outreach contributions statewide. IEI's annual Emerging Issues Forum attracts leaders in business, education, and public policy to discuss an issue with profound implications for North Carolina's future economic competitiveness. For more about IEI, please visit emergingissues.org. The IEI Communications Team develops, implements, and provides day-to-day management of IEI's comprehensive communications program. Communications is responsible for raising statewide awareness of the brand, increasing visibility through strategic communication and engagement with stakeholders, building and fostering understanding of IEI's programs and initiatives, and executing complex campaigns across multiple communications channels that convey the value and impact of IEI and its programs.

Essential Job Duties: The Communications Director, a senior-level position reporting to the Director for the Institute for Emerging Issues, leads the planning, creation and implementation of a strategic, multi-faceted marketing and communications program designed to build and strengthen the organization's role and reputation as a leader and authoritative voice in its field. The Communications Director will manage the communications and marketing staff, and will work collaboratively with individuals and various organizations, the University, and with the North Carolina stakeholder base. The primary responsibilities of the Communications Director include: - Lead, motivate, supervise and evaluate a team of talented communication professionals to promote a consistent, professional and collaborative image for the organization that helps achieve short-and long-term goals. - Develop and implement creative and measurable communications and marketing plans that encompass advertising, public relations, market research, publications, digital/social media, events, media relations, and other aspects of strategic marketing. - Manage the communications budget to support the organization's communications and marketing goals; manage the emergingissues.org website; and collaborate with the University Communications leadership and other communications professionals in communicating a unified brand and reputation. - Devise a program guidelines and policies, oversee the implementation process, and provide quality control for all IEI Communications programs, media activities and messaging.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Department Required Skills: * Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in marketing and communications strategy. * Proficiency with media dissemination and tracking software (such as Cision); content management systems (such as WordPress); Adobe CC (Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop), and email marketing/contact management software (such as Cvent, Bronto, MailChimp, etc.).

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Bachelor's degree (or higher) in journalism, public relations, marketing or related field. (All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.), and a minimum of five years of experience in strategic marketing communications, public relations and/or media relations is preferred. * Ten or more years of public affairs/relations experience in government, nonprofit and/or higher education sectors. * Experience in public policy/advocacy communications. * Outstanding project management skills. * Excellent writing skills; innovation approach and creative execution. * Demonstrated ability in managing a budget. * Demonstrated success in managing, supporting and motivating staff. * Creative and strategic application of digital and social media technologies. * Experience and expertise in marketing, media relations, public affairs, crisis communications, issues management, social media and public relations. * Commitment to the ideals of a major public research university. * Knowledge of issues relating to North Carolina. * Relationships/professional networks with key North Carolina constituencies, including government and media.
