MSAG ACADEMIC ADVISOR
Duties: The Academic Advisor supports SAS' strategic goals to deliver excellent, innovative academic programs that aligns Penn's strengths in the Earth and Environmental Science Department (EES) with the needs of professional studies audiences seeking to advance their knowledge and careers in the Environmental and Geosciences fields. Primary outcomes are: academic excellence, curricular and programmatic innovation, student achievement, and satisfaction. DUTIES: Advise MSAG students on program curriculum, planning a program of study, and course options. Attend special program events, foster alumni involvement. Assist students in finding internships and jobs. Participate in admissions decisions and recruitment events. Help students find Project Design topics and advise Project Designs when appropriate. Advise Independent study projects as needed. The adviser will also teach three Graduate level Applied Geoscience courses throughout the year. At least two courses will be required for the program and one will be an elective. Teaching areas include Geophysics and Hydrology and will be approved by the Program Director annually.
Qualifications: Masters or higher degree in Geosciences/Earth Sciences or equivalent experience in a discipline of Earth Science including practical experience and demonstrated ability to connect basic science with application, is required. 2-5 years of experience in academic advising in a University setting or equivalent in positions of increasing responsibility, is strongly preferred. Must have a proven record of teaching at the graduate level. Outstanding oral and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to interact with professional students, and work successfully as part of a team, goal oriented. Able to work some evenings and weekends. Some travel required. Preferred: Knowledge of current trends in continuing and professional education.
