The Agricultural Nutrient Management/Soil Health Specialist will work on the project "Agricultural Nutrient Management in the Long Island Sound Watershed" directed by Dr. Mike O'Neill, UConn Extension. The project is funded through the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP).

The individual in this position will work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty members from UConn's Departments of Extension and Natural Resources and the Environment as well as government agency and Industry partners. Under the guidance of faculty and others, the individual will be responsible for both gathering data about nutrient management and soil health from various agricultural producers in Connecticut, as well as assisting in the compilation of resource conservation plans for the same producers. The position will require in-state travel (reimbursed at federal rates) to visit agricultural operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The activities of this project will be determined and carried out in collaboration with faculty members from UConn's Departments of Extension and Natural Resources and the Environment, and Industry partners. Duties of this position will include, but are not limited to:
  • Identify agricultural producer partners in Connecticut to collaborate with this project.
  • Carry out site visits to agricultural producer partners and determine resource conservation needs.
  • Develop USDA approved conservation plans for a subset of agricultural producers in Connecticut.
  • Support the relationship between the University of Connecticut and stakeholders by demonstrating considerate and cooperative behavior when interacting with agricultural producers.
  • Report progress and results of the project to the rest of the team on a monthly basis.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in agriculture-related discipline (e.g., Natural resources management, Agricultural engineering, etc.) and at least two years of post-degree experience
  • Ability to write USDA-approved conservation plans for nutrient management and soil health.
  • Knowledge of agriculture/nutrient management and soil health in the northeast U.S.
  • Experience with operating a computer and basic software applications.
  • Ability to travel to various sites around the state (valid driver's license required)
  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor work environments
  • Ability to converse in English on the phone and in person with agricultural producers.
  • Some duties may be required outside normal business hours.
  • Mileage for use of personal vehicle for business will be reimbursed at federal rates

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in an agriculture- or water-related field.
  • 3 years of experience working directly with agricultural producers.
  • Demonstrated experience in social scientific techniques, such as interviewing.
  • Experience writing conservation plans for agricultural producers.
  • Knowledge of current agricultural issues related to nutrient management and soil health.

APPOINTMENT TERM
  • This is a full-time 11-month non tenure track position based in Storrs, Connecticut. Salary will be commensurate with experience. This is an annual appointment that is renewable upon successful completion of duties and availability of funding.
