The Position of Police Captain is a senior command staff level employee skilled in problem solving and personnel management who is responsible for the functions of the Training and Administrative Support Division. The Police Captain supervises work performed in connection with the prevention, reporting, investigation, prosecution and analysis of crime. The duties include the supervision and enforcement of all rules, regulations, general orders, policies and procedures for the Albany State University Police Department. The Police Captain also functions as the Training Coordinator for the department and provides training guidelines for the department and collaborate training efforts for the overall campus community. The Police Captain acts as a liaison for collaboration with outside law enforcement agencies and other civic groups and acts as directed by the Chief of Police as the Public Information Officer. The Captain oversees Computer AID Dispatch training and training needs as assigned by the Chief of Police. This position serves as primary agency TAC Operator, supervises the Communications supervisor, primary Sexual Assault Officer and other Administrative Support Units. The Captain serves as the department's coordinator with the Board of Regents and the Captain is a direct report to the Chief of Police. In the absence of higher ranking command, the Captain shall assume the duties of that area.  

Training and Experience:

Must have a valid Peace Officer Certification in the state of Georgia. Must have an associate degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science or a related field or work. A bachelor degree in the listed fields preferred. Must be Post Instructor Certified within 6 months of hire date. Must have at least 6 years in law enforcement. Must have at least 3 years of experience at the rank of Sergeant. Should have proven professional communication skills. 

Ability to demonstrate past collaborative skills and efforts for community and civic groups.  

Testing Requirements:

Must pass department assessment.

*Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, staffing, and evaluating subordinate personnel in the assigned division. 
*Employs leadership by example as a motivational tool for all subordinates. 
*Employs a visionary approach to planning for the future. 
*Assists with the budgetary process by submitting an annual budget request for an assigned division and manages annual expenditures for division operations as required. 
*Anticipates problems and implements preventive measures and solutions. 
*Empowers Section Leaders and Line staff to build morale, accountability and professionalism throughout the department. 
*Inspects and monitors police installations, equipment and employees within an assigned division on a daily basis. 
*Ensures all department training and records are up to date. 
*Commends and disciplines employees when appropriate. 
*Works various shifts as needed to supervise work performance and holiday work required. 
*Makes effective work assignments. 
*Communicates effectively with both the general public and subordinates. 
*Performs other duties, as assigned.
