Position Summary: The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) focuses on the interface between people & the environment with interdisciplinary programs in air quality, atmospheric processes, human exposure & health effects, & sustainable water resources, drawn from faculty expertise in the physical and life sciences, engineering and policy. ESE is an academic & research department located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The mission of our school is to improve public health, promote individual well-being & eliminate health inequities across North Carolina and around the world. We have 24 faculty, 29 joint/adjunct faculty, an administrative staff of 14, & 7 research staff members; as well as approximately 120 graduate students. Our education mission is to prepare graduates with an interdisciplinary outlook for relevant careers in research, teaching, or professional practice. We do so by offering an undergraduate degree (BS in Public Health - Environmental Health Sciences), four master's degrees (MPH; MS; MSEE; & MSPH), & the PhD. Also, a dual master's degree between ESE & the Department of City & Regional Planning's MCRP degree. ESE's research strengths include characterizing exposures to contaminants in air, water, soil & workplaces; developing engineering & policy solutions to environmental risks; molecular approaches to understanding diseases caused by toxic nvironmental substances; & overcoming environmental health challenges in developing countries. The Academic Coordinator will manage all components of ESE's grad and undergrad student program & is responsible for the academic, curriculum, enrollment & financial management of ESE student resources. The position will have dual reporting relationship to the ESE Department & SPH Assistant Dean of Student Affairs & will supervise one SHRA support staff to accomplish the tasks.

Education Requirements: An advanced degree in a relevant field is required, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Qualification and Experience: Prefer minimum 5 years management experience with 3 years in area of student affairs; strong communication, organizational, management skills; strong computer/Excel skills. MANAGING PROCESSES: Ability to communicate with others to understand work processes/procedures; provide ongoing feedback of employee performance expectations & recommend areas for improvement; create/facilitate learning opportunities; & provide directional input on program services. DECISION MAKING: Use of effective approaches to choose course of action/develop solutions; take action consistent with facts, constraints, & anticipated consequences; & analyze/synthesize relevant policies & legislation & apply to situations. COORDINATION/OPERATIONS: Ability to coordinate/manage broad scope of operations/processes to meet programmatic expectations/outcomes. PROGRAM MGMT: Ability to identify, understand, address, resolve student affairs issues, stakeholder needs, & recurring matters; initiate creative programming to engage student participation; collect/research/analyze information for processing/monitoring/measuring data; develop internal processes & prioritize workload; generate non-standard reports; function as team member; supervise/assign/review others' work; & mentor/assist in areas of technical expertise. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ability to develop/maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders in order to initiate/facilitate/complete work in assigned area; independently interpret policy & procedure within delegated authority when responding to customer requests & non-standard issues; recognize impact of individual decisions on other program areas/goals; & employ de-escalation techniques/conflict-management strategies as needed. DATA/RECORDS ADMIN: Ability to research/collect/analyze data, & write reports; utilize/reconcile/manipulate data from various software systems; & apply knowledge of program specialty or program areas to improve existing programs/develop new ones.
