Duties: This position will work closely with the Wharton Admissions team to gather, structure and analyze admissions data to optimize the Wharton admissions process. At its core this position is about revolutionizing admissions with data driven analytic methods. This position will apply machine learning and computational statistical techniques to admissions, academic, administrative and web data to develop new strategies for the office and to support strategic decision making. The individual in this role is expected to be comfortable working as a software engineer and as a quantitative researcher. This position will develop state of the art algorithms and tools. Specifically, programming will range across a subset of machine learning, text mining, natural language processing, optimization techniques, data product development and data visualization. Responsible for leading the design of complex data models based upon business requirements and strategic needs.

This position will collaborate widely across departments and with various faculty members providing thought leadership and a data-driven perspective regarding strategic initiatives. Works with senior admissions staff to identify and answer important questions though statistical analysis and machine learning. Leads data acquisition and collection from various platforms according to the strategic goals of the school. Communicates technical and quantitative concepts to a broad, non-technical audience; trains and provides technical support to colleagues.

Supervises junior data analysts. Provides planning, training, mentorship and support; develops new projects appropriate to their experience and skills, compatible with the goals of the department. Provides thought leadership and a data-driven perspective on strategic initiatives.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree is required; master's degree in a quantitative discipline preferred and 4- 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required knowledge includes process and data modeling, data architectural development methodology and working knowledge of databases. Experience using data analysis tools including programming languages is required. Fluency with programming in R or Python is required. Experience manipulating and analyzing complex large volume high dimensionality data from varying sources. Fluently with statistical and machine learning techniques, such as natural language processing, Bayesian statistics, optimization, linear and integer programming, classification, clustering, regression and dimensionality reduction. Advanced knowledge of Excel required. Experience with reporting and data visualization tools required. Familiarity with optimization routines a must. Familiarity with Visual Basic and database design and management a plus (SQL Server/MySQL/etc).

Demonstrated expertise in process redesign, systems analysis and design and the ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies.

Experience using various reporting and data visualization tools. The ability to work in a collaborative environment and meet established deadlines; ability to work independently as well as within a team structure. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are required, including the ability to communicate highly technical concepts to a broad audience.
