We are looking for a highly motivated individual to help kick-start the new lab of Dr. Jenna McHenry (http://psychandneuro.duke.edu/people/jenna-mchenry) at Duke University. The McHenry lab investigates how social information is encoded in neural circuits that regulate motivational and emotional states. The lab uses a combination of state-of-the-art techniques, including deep-brain calcium imaging (2-photon in vivo microscopy) with single-cell resolution and optogenetics, to monitor and manipulate the activity of neurons with anatomical and molecular precision, in awake behaving mice. Collectively, these studies will provide insights into social and motivational processes that are disrupted across a range of conditions, such as major depression, reproductive mood disorders, and autism spectrum disorders.

The ideal candidate will have received prior experience in a laboratory setting using live rodents and an undergraduate degree in neuroscience, biology, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline. Some familiarity or prior training using neuroscience approaches in live rodents, such as mice, is preferred. An interest in how the brain processes social information is also a plus, as is a knowledge of at least one programming language (preferably Python or Matlab). The applicant must be detail-oriented, well-organized, pro-active and able to manage multiple and changing priorities as needed to move experiments and the research program forward. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a positive attitude arerequired for this team-based environment. The candidate must be flexible and willing to function in a high-paced environment. The candidate's initial focus will be to work with the Principal Investigator to help set up the new laboratory and then transition efforts towards maintaining the lab, conducting experiments, and training new members. The candidate will have the opportunity to learn valuable skills that will be relevant to advancing their career in science or medicine. The position is available for an initial one-year period starting this September of 2018, with potential for renewal. Work Performed
  • Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments and make modifications to existing procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular studies as required.
  • Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting physical and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for research purposes and assemble data sets from experimental results.
  • Experiments including:set up instruments, material, and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests, mouse surgery, mouse behavior, histology, and optogenetics.
  • Help maintain a mouse colony; including oversight of breeding colony, tissue collections for genotyping, maintenance of animal colony records, and euthanasia.
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies, and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain laboratory equipment. Review laboratory methods, manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.
  • Review work of lower level laboratory personnel and assist in training new personnel.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience An undergraduate degree in neuroscience, biology, chemistry, physics, or related disciplines, or an equivalent period of laboratory experience, is required. The ability to handle laboratory rodents on a regular basis is an essential component of this position. Thus, prior experience working with live animals, preferably rodents (e.g. mice), in a laboratory or similar setting is also required. Additional technical or analytical skills are preferred but not required.
