PROGRAM/UNIT DESCRIPTION

TheDuke Global Health Institute seeks a 100% FTE Research Project Manager to serve as Research Coordinator for Healthy Eating Research, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Healthy Eating Research is directed by Mary Story, PhD, RD, and funds policy and environmental research related to healthy eating promotion and obesity prevention among children and adolescents in the United States.

The program office manages Healthy Eating Research grant making and commissioned research for RWJF, provides technical assistance and direction to research teams nationwide, and works with the funding agency and consultants to synthesize research findings to help inform policy change at community, state, and federal levels.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will serve as Research Coordinator for the Healthy Eating Research national program office, under the supervision of the Deputy Director, Megan Lott.

This individual will be responsible for a variety of complex and independent activities involved in the planning and organizing of research activities to support the mission of Healthy Eating Research.

Primary responsibilities include:

1) Serve as main financial program staff person for consulting agreements and subawards, including managing all aspects of contract set-up, invoicing, and payment.

2) Coordinate and plan local and national conferences and meetings, including national annual grantee meeting, proposal review meetings, and special-topic meetings and conferences.

3) Manage application and review processes for annual call for proposals, including coordinate the development of call for proposals application and review materials, and provide technical assistance to applicants.

4) Provide technical assistance, budgetary oversight, and collect and review status reports of grantees and commissioned researchers, collaborators,advocates, policymakers, and funders.

5) Review grant funding expenditures and financial reports and recommend budget parameters for funding proposals.

6) Manage grantee information and maintain program database and spreadsheets.

7) Participate in strategic planning and development of HER activities.

8) Provide timely and accurate information in response to funding and technical assistance inquiries received via email and phone .

9) Assume key role in preparation of program funding proposals and annual reports, including narrative, budget, and bibliography.

Education

Master's degree in social sciences or similar curricula preferred.

Experience

Minimum of three years of related program evaluation experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

PREFER:
Four years of experience coordinating the work of a national, or multi-year research program.

Experience in research or program administration is required.

Skills:

1) Work history managing large studies and/or implementing complex projects;

2) outstanding organizational and time-management skills and attention to detail, including ability to document work and maintain thorough and organized electronic and paper shared files;

3) a work history demonstrating the ability to work independently and to take initiative.

4) experience with database development and management;

5) ability to work independently and to take initiative, as well as ability to multi-task and work as a team member in a fast- paced, deadline-driven environment;

6) ability to prioritize multiple tasks and adapt quickly to shifting program priorities;

7) highly developed interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills;

8) ability to work effectively with a variety of organizations and individuals, including funding agency, related programs nationwide, funded researchers, national advisory committee members, consultants, and others;

9) ability to navigate work processes among multiple partners and organizations with diplomacy and keep program information strictly confidential; and

10) strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access), literature search engines (e.g., Medline, PubMed), and online marketing programs (e.g., Constant Contact).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates with:

• a work history demonstrating successful support of a national, or multi-year research program

• experience managing contract set-up, invoicing, and payment;

• experience monitoring and reporting on program budgets, grants, and contracts;

• experience developing research solicitation materials, including calls for proposals and application and proposal review materials;

• knowledge of and experience with scientific grant proposal review/selection processes;

• experience planning and implementing large national meetings and conferences;

• excellent oral and written communication skills
