The Azusa Pacific University College of Music and the Arts invites applicants for the position of Founding Chair, Department of Design, appointment to begin July 1, 2018.
In Fall 2018, the Department of Art and Design within the College of Music and the Arts (CMA) at Azusa Pacific University (APU) will be becoming two collaborative departments: a Department of Design and a Department of Visual Art. CMA is conducting a national search for the founding Department Chair of the new Department of Design. As of Fall 2018, the department will have five full-time faculty managing a Bachelor of Arts in Design, a new Master of Arts in User Experience Design, and a new Master of Arts in Web Design.
The Chair provides leadership in the department in the areas of curricular development, research, faculty engagement, student development, fiscal management, and external affairs. The Chair reports to the Dean, and works in collaboration on faculty recruitment and development; program assessment and curriculum development; student recruitment and retention; fiscal development; budget management; and provide support and oversight for faith integration across the curriculum.
Applicants should present evidence of teaching excellence and active scholarship and participation in the fields of design. It is anticipated the applicant will demonstrate leadership experience, preferably in an academic department or other administrative experience, inspiring collaboration and community. Applicants should articulate a vision for rigorous curriculum with a focus on preparing students to succeed professionally and to be technically, aesthetically, and creatively prepared to innovate in these critical areas.
Qualifications: MFA in Design, MDes, or other related terminal degree. The candidate must be committed to the educational mission and Christian orientation of the university.

The preferred candidate has experience in one or more areas in the field of design:
- Record of professional accomplishments.
- Prior teaching experience at the college or university level.
- Experience with curricular development.
- Excellent communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside the academy.
- Entrepreneurial development or "Start Up" experience.
