Duties: The primary purpose of the position of Contributing Editor is to assemble the daily Penn Today newsletter, companion to the Penn Today website, run out of University Communications. The position exists to facilitate timely dissemination of content, through the newsletter and media advisories and to assist on updates to the website, in order to ensure that the office is generating content consistent with institutional priorities.
Reporting to the Associate Director for News in the Office of University Communications, the Contributing Editor will be responsible for the production of the daily Penn Today newsletter as well as the weekly Penn Today Weekly and Penn Today for Parents newsletters: uploading stories, images, videos, and related content via the mailchimp content management system to Penn Today. This position will write headlines and blurbs on Penn Today newsletter, and will assume other writing duties as needed. The Contributing Editor will maintain and update the department-wide and University-wide newsletter story schedule to ensure coverage of essential events and priorities and confirm content is ushered through the editorial process in a timely manner.
The Contributing Editor will also produce the daily Penn in the News email and oversee a range of projects supporting media relations and the newsroom. This will include being the first line of contact for incoming media calls and general inquiries to the newsroom, drafting and distributing event advisories and other media materials. This position will work closely with the news and writing staff of University Communications to monitor ongoing stories and breaking news.
Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred and 2 years to 3 years of experience in writing, journalism, publications, graphic design or some equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Demonstrated skill in writing and proofreading, and familiarity with Photoshop and content management systems required. Must be comfortable working on tight deadlines and meeting the requirements of a daily publication schedule. Knowledge of design programs, photography, and content management tools such as MailChimp required. Experience in higher education preferred. Ability to work with teams and collaborate with staff while also working independently, and excellent time management and organizational skills desirable.
