Occupational Summary

Develop, plan and implement activities to support department research and projects funded by grants and contracts; Identify relevant external funding sources; create and maintain a resource library and ensure communication of information on funding opportunities to faculty and staff.

Work Performed
  • Identify research funding opportunities and potential collaborations with government agencies (domestic and foreign), institutions, universities, and industries.
  • Assess the suitability and potential for success for new research and educational opportunities and provide information to senior leadership and faculty.
  • Funding opportunities should cross multiple disciplines/divisions/departments.
  • Working with principal investigators (PIs), coordinate and facilitate proposal preparation and budget development for complex funding opportunities and partnerships.
  • Provide strategic advice to PIs and faculty teams with regard to funding opportunities, program design, and proposal submission.
  • Facilitate strategic planning meetings with faculty and PIs on new initiatives. Determine appropriate resources required to pursue new initiatives.
  • Work with PIs to ensure successful competitive site visits for new initiatives, when being reviewed by funding organizations.
  • Identify and support partnerships with academic and community organizations internal and external to Duke University for funding opportunities.
  • Provide program teams with proposal content for complex projects including but not limited to NSF center proposals, fully qualified cost proposals, and non-federal contracts.
  • Identify staffing needs for new initiatives. Provide information to manager of research development teams for recruitment and training of team.
  • Identify new administrative mechanisms as needed to implement new programs. Represent initiatives for funding agencies and government representatives' investigators and liaise with potential partner institutions.
  • Facilitate the pre-award review of complex proposals with multiple PIs ensuring conformity with University, Medical Center and funding agency policies and procedures; Assist PI to monitor and coordinate grant and contract implementation with project directors and central pre-award offices.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with representatives of funding sources.
  • Develop liaisons and coordinate appropriate activities with related University and Medical Center functions such as Sponsored Programs, University or Medical Center Development and Technology Transfer.
  • Develop, clarify or redefine department research policies; advise and assist project directors and department support offices to ensure compliance with policies set forth by the University, Medical Center and external agencies.

Education

Bachelor's degree in English, communications, science, business or arelated field. Advanced degree is highly desirable with demonstrationof an understanding and familiarity with a broad range of science ortechnical subject matter.
