This is a full-time, tenure-track position. Under the general supervision of the Director of Counseling, Advising, and Disability Services, the Counselor will provide direct services to students regarding academic advising, career exploration, personal counseling, and crisis management, and will represent the office on college wide committees.

JOB DUTIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting individuals and groups in personal development and career exploration and first-term advising
  • Academic advising of new and returning students
  • Delivering individual personal and crisis counseling by meeting with students and referring them to appropriate on- and off-campus resources
  • Assisting students in college placement and informal transcript analysis as it relates to first-term course placement
  • Supporting student success through retention best practices
  • Training for faculty and staff on best practices for student advising
  • Maintaining a welcoming and efficient office environment including provision of excellent customer service in a fast-paced, multicultural setting
  • Supporting the development of the annual work plan for Counseling and Advising
  • Implementing retention strategies by working closely with faculty, Student Services staff, and other Centralia staff in evaluating and improving retention strategies for students in programs of responsibility
  • Promoting cooperative and collaborative relations between the college, district and community constituents; act as a team player; and demonstrate a strong sense of integrity and acceptance of differing points of view
  • Representing the College at appropriate local, state and regional meetings; serve on College committees and teams as assigned
  • Following counseling best practices and code of ethical conduct
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Counseling; Student Development; or related field; and
  • Mental Health Counseling credential.
  • Two years of experience advising students in a college or university setting
  • Three years of experience providing mental health counseling
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job duties.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems effectively, efficiently, using principles of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze data, prepare reports and make recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting college policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a fast- paced, rapidly growing, intense, and multifunctional office environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiently using MS Office software (particularly Access and Excel) and the internet.
