Job Summary

The Division of Student Affairs welcomes applications for a Director of Financial Planning and Reporting. The Director will report to and partner with the Director of Budget & Operations and will play a critical role in planning, developing, implementing, directing and evaluating Student Affairs’ financial management strategy.

The Director will use an understanding of higher education accounting practices and financial models along with an understanding of the evolving nature of the university’s funding structure to recommend optimal budgeting and resource management practices for adoption by the division. The position is a strategic partner in providing leadership and vision to the VCSA cabinet regarding the management of division finances. This role is critical in ensuring that the division’s financial resources are managed in a way that enables Student Affairs to meet its long-term strategic goals in alignment with the overall campus fiscal strategy.

The Director of Financial Planning and Reporting will be responsible for assessing the effectiveness of the division’s financing planning, analysis and reporting standards and for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of divisional financial information. This position is responsible for monitoring key fiscal indicators and alerting the Director of Budget & Operations of any concerns. The Director will be responsible for developing and overseeing Student Affairs Financial Planning and Reporting Department and determining the scope and level of support provided by this department as well as the optimal organizational structure needed to provide this support.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Oversee Student Affairs Financial Planning and Reporting Department

  • Build and lead a high performing Financial Planning and Reporting Department.
  • Determine appropriate staffing model to execute departmental responsibilities including organizational structure, staffing levels, roles and reporting lines.
  • Mentor and develop staff including training, problem resolution, performance evaluation, and the building of an effective team dynamic.
  • In consultation with division leadership, determine departmental priorities and expectations and allocate departmental resources to effectively meet these goals.
  • Continually assess departmental performance and plan for continual improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit.
Financial Planning and Strategy

  • Develop and oversee a division-wide financial management structure that ensures resources are available and allocated in a way that enables Student Affairs to meet its long-term strategic goals that align with the overall campus fiscal strategy.
  • Establish short and long-range financial plans that leverage all available funding sources in support of the division’s priorities.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a standardized budgeting methodology that is flexible enough to take into account the unique needs of department-specific stakeholders, timelines, and funding streams.
  • Develop budgeting tools that allow Student Affairs leadership to consider departmental budget requests both in isolation and in a consolidated, division-wide manner and to realign budgets to ensure division priorities and core functions are appropriately resourced.
  • Facilitate ongoing and ad hoc financial modeling to project the short-term and long-term impacts of rate increases or decreases, capital investments and other budgetary tradeoffs and to inform division-level decision-making.
  • Establish guidelines to ensure that departmental fee and rate-setting models take into account, and appropriately value, all relevant factors.
  • Assess divisional cash flows and investment projections and set appropriate reserve targets.
  • Work with campus partners to identify and, where possible, eliminate systemic barriers that are impeding the division’s ability to maximize the use of various funding streams.
  • Research regulatory changes that could significantly impact the division’s finances and provides Student Affairs’ leadership with recommendations on how to adapt operations in response.
Business Analysis and Financial Reporting

  • Oversee the financial reporting and analysis processes for the division to ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial information and to alert division leadership to areas of concern.
  • Direct the creation and production of standardized reports and dashboards to provide division leaders with up-to-date information on budgets, revenues and expenses, fund balances and reserves and other financial indicators.
  • Manage the on-going review of financial information to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Develop specialized reports to identify trends or patterns in revenue streams and resource use at the request of Student Affairs’ leadership.
  • Analyze historical financial data to anticipate potential funding or cash flow issues and recommend strategies to address.
  • Assess revenue streams and implement safeguards to ensure that departments remit applicable sales tax and report unrelated business income.
  • Responsible for ensuring that division reporting practices adhere to relevant university fund accounting standards and fiscal policies.


What We Can Offer

The anticipated starting salary for this position is $110,000.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business, accounting or a related field.
  • Six years of related professional accounting experience with a proven track record of increasing responsibility in successfully managing a large complex accounting office encompassing accounting, accounts receivable and business management.
  • Two years of progressively responsible management experience within higher education accounting.
  • Two years of successful supervisory experience of professional staff.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Master’s degree in accounting or related field from an accredited college or university. Substitution: Professional level accounting or finance work experience may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • Experience working with large, complex, multi-departmental budgets.
  • Working knowledge of PeopleSoft.
  • Experience designing and building queries in various database settings, such as PeopleSoft or Access.
  • At least five years of successful experience in planning, developing and implementing complex strategic goals and program initiatives.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Experience collaborating with students and student leadership.
  • Certified Public Accountant.
