Job description

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) has an opening for a, 1-year Post-Doctoral Associate or Professional Research Assistant 1 under an NSF-sponsored project called "EaSM2: Linking near-term future changes in weather and hydroclimate in western North America to adaptation for ecosystem and water management," or "WestClim." This multi-disciplinary project will investigate climate processes that affect ecoregions and river basins, the predictability of those processes on decadal and longer time scales, and the interaction of climate with the management of public lands, ecosystems, and water management. The project is a collaboration between Dr. Andrea Ray at the NOAA/Earth System Research Lab Physical Sciences Division, Dr. Balaji Rajagopalan at the University of Colorado, and the group of Dr. Richard Seager at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) of Columbia University. The incumbent will be located at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, and the position is through August 31, 2019. We will begin reviewing applications June 20th, and continue until the position is filled.

The successful candidate will conduct research in a highly applied and multidisciplinary context. In the first part of this 5-year project, we developed an understanding of regional needs for climate science for practitioners of natural resource management in the Plains and Prairie Potholes region of the Great Plains. At the same time, the physical scientists at Lamont and CU have pushed forward the understanding of climate, with regional foci on the Great Plains/Missouri Basin, the Southwest/American Monsoon region, and the Rio Grande basin. The new post-doc is expected to work on more directly connecting the completed and ongoing science as part of the project with this understanding of practitioner needs, either in the Great Plains/Missouri Basin or the American Monsoon region. This phase of the 5-year project is intended to connect the science understanding with specific climate-sensitive decisions and management, and entry points for climate information in management and planning processes, and provide feedback to the final phase of the hydroclimate research. Activities may include analyzing policy and management decisions and the institutions making them to identify needs and entry points for climate information by land, water, and ecosystem management practitioners in one or more of the target regions; assessing how evolving understanding of long term changes in regional climate features might be relevant to management needs identified; and how to translate science under this project into useable knowledge. Position Responsibilities also include:
• Collaborate with project colleagues within CIRES, NOAA, and LDEO, including providing feedback on needs for and use of information to the final phase of the hydroclimate research.
• Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and in outputs aimed at practitioners, and make presentations at both scientific meetings and to practitioner groups
• Assist and lead in the development of meetings and workshops in support of project objectives

• Travel to conduct research in the applications regions, and to meet with the LDEO PIs as part of the project team.


Minimum Qualifications

• PhD in related field (including but not limited to Geography, Environmental Studies, Policy Sciences, SES), or MS and at least 3 years experience

• Knowledge of context-sensitive social science methods for analyzing institutions and policy and management processes

• Some familiarity with climate science and its nexus with public lands, ecosystems or water management issues, especially in the Western U.S.

• Demonstrated experience with interacting with practitioners and understanding their needs

• Demonstrated ability to present and perform on a professional level through use of excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills

• Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team of researchers
